Elevating your appearance is easy if you follow four key steps

December (aka the season of socialising) is right around the corner, and as invitations pour in from family, friends, and colleagues, fashionistas across the nation will be on the hunt for the perfect ensembles.

But before you panic-buy 10 outfits you'll never wear again, consider that the ultimate ensemble for your black-tie ball, sit-down meal, or casual drinks may already exist in your wardrobe – you may just not know it yet.

According to fashion creator Laura Summers, you can discover unexpected treasures in your own closet "without having to spend a penny".

Taking to TikTok, Ms Summers (who goes by @thelaurasummers) shared her top tips.

While these were created with women over 40 in mind, all style enthusiasts can benefit from these pearly words of wisdom.

Style what you already have

Have you ever seen an outfit on someone else and thought, 'Wow, I'd love to wear something like that'? You probably have all the components in your closet without even realising.

"It's learning how to piece them together," the expert advised, urging women to look at their wardrobes from a new angle.

Taking everything out and experimenting with new pairings is the easiest way to create beautiful outfits you'd never have put together before.

Find your fashion inspiration

From fashion creators to A-list celebrities, there will likely be someone whose style you admire.

Have a look at their social media, save some outfit pictures, and refer to them the next time you're stuck.

"Make folders in Instagram, and immediately save all the outfits you like into those folders," Ms Summers advised.

If you have outfit ideas for the daytime, nighttime, casual do's, fancy soirées, and holidays, your life will be easy when it comes to getting ready.

"This will also stop you running to the shops and panic-buying an outfit. Trust me, it works," she added.

Reconsider your hair and makeup

If you're feeling a little lacklustre, it may not be your outfit. According to the style guru, changing up your hair and/or makeup may be all your look needs to go from meh to marvellous. Making these tweaks will stop you from feeling samey or bored.

"You're in the same outfit, but you look different, so it tricks your mind slightly."

Accessorise to perfection

The colder weather makes autumn "the perfect time to accessorise". Hats, gloves, and scarves can really elevate an outfit, just like bags, belts, jewellery, and shoes.

Ms Summers advised: "Just accessorise an outfit differently, and it'll feel like a completely new outfit."

If your wardrobe is slightly lacking and you do need to hit the shops, one fashionista shared what not to buy this autumn, urging women to skip three trends.

Recommending "classic, timeless pieces" over the latest fads, she emphasised the importance of cultivating a staple wardrobe this season.
