While it's easy to pick your outfits based on comfort, ease, and familiarity, you run the risk of losing style points.
According to midlife fashion creator Alex, this is particularly true for women over 50, who tend to stick to what they know.
Claiming that middle-aged women fall into bad fashion habits, she criticised the typical "tight T-shirt over slim jeans uniform".
Alex (@lifeafter_50) told her TikTok followers: "It feels safe because we're used to it, but it looks dated, frumpy, unflattering, and makes us look invisible."
Thankfully, it's possible to "upgrade" your look with a few simple tweaks, according to the fashionista.
For those who live in staples such as T-shirts and jeans, this doesn't mean getting rid of them altogether. These are absolutely fine – you've just got to know how to style them for success.
Touching on fit, layers, and colour, Alex shared three lessons for a better wardrobe after 50.
Rather than wearing a clingy T-shirt, opt for a chic shirt or cardigan

Tight clothes = frumpy
You might think that tight garments are slimming, as they hug your curves and show off your figure.
However, according to the expert, skin-tight clothing is actually rather "frumpy".
The creator believes that "thin, clingy" T-shirts accentuate the lumps and bumps you'd rather conceal.
What's more, they "highlight the widest part of your hips, making legs look shorter".
The expert advised women over 50 to swap their skinny jeans for a looser variety – "you'll look slimmer" – and add a shirt or cardigan over T-shirts. These layers can then be tucked in to highlight the waist.

A blazer can upgrade any look
For an effortlessly chic look, women over 50 can swap their button-down shirts and cardigans for a blazer.
"These are perfect for adding structure and polish," Alex said.
Blazers are super easy to throw on, yet instantly make you look like you've made a big effort.
To make them more casual, the fashionista advised women to roll their sleeves up.
Not only does this make for a "relaxed and stylish" look, but you instantly look a little "slimmer", thanks to the added structure and shape.
Colour choice is key
Discovering the perfect fit and securing the trendiest layers are key for a great look over 50.
However, none of this matters if the colour of your clothing doesn't work for you.
Alex said: "When choosing your outfit, keep colour combinations in mind. Select ones that highlight and complement each other and your palette."
Finding your most flattering colours can involve a lot of trial and error, but once you've nailed your palette, fashion becomes far simpler.
It's important to note that what suits one person may not suit another. However, some experts believe that across the board, there are colours women over 50 should universally avoid.
Speaking exclusively to GB News, one personal stylist claimed middle-aged women can look 10 years younger if they ditch a "draining" shade.
