Make-up can help minimise the signs of ageing but if done wrong, it could add years to your appearance

Women have been warned against the make-up mistake they could be making as they age.

An expert shared tips on the best way to apply concealer to avoid ageing the face. They also advised against using a certain type of eyeshadow.

Concealer is a staple for most people and it is a brilliant tool for covering spots, blemishes and dark circles.

However, if it is applied wrong it can be incredibly ageing. Make-up artist and YouTube star Wayne Goss shared the mistakes people often make.

He said picking the wrong shade and applying it in the wrong areas are common mistakes to avoid, especially as we age.

The expert explained: “Generally speaking, people may go too light around the eyes with their concealer which can add years to your face, so it's really important to get the colour that suits your skin tone.

"Cream concealer is always recommended above liquids, and I’d highly recommend applying some on the inner corner of your eye, as that’s the one part of the eye that doesn’t crease.”

Women often stick with the same brand and shade of concealer for many years, but that doesn't mean it is the best product for them. It is worth shopping around and trying different shades every so often.

This comes as experts at beauty and wellness marketplace Fresha shared more advice on using concealer.

They said: "This is only emphasized further when you use too much concealer under your eyes, as this can cause your skin to look cakey and cause product to build up in your fine lines, ultimately having a drying effect."

Wayne explained another beauty mistake people should avoid and it can also be seen around the eyes.

He said people should ditch metallic eyeshadows and instead pick matte products as doing this can help hide fine lines and wrinkles.

"Avoid metallic eyeshadows and instead, opt for a matte. Matte generally works best as it doesn’t draw attention to wrinkled areas or creases," the expert stated.

"Powder is also easier to apply over creams, especially as it is easier to blend with a good quality brush.

"Never blend eyeshadow with a finger - good quality brushes are made with the intention to blend well with hooded eyelids and fine lines."

Using eyeliner in the correct way is also important for turning back the years on the face, according to a beauty expert.
