Applying make-up in the wrong way can add years to your appearance

Make-up is a wonderful tool for hiding the signs of ageing and highlighting your natural beauty.

However, it can have the opposite effect if done incorrectly. An expert warns of the make-up errors to avoid.

Applying foundation, eye shadow and lipstick are all essential steps in most women's make-up routines and there are plenty of different shades to choose from.

However, according to make-up artist and YouTube star Wayne Goss, women should be careful when picking their eyeshadow shade and applying products.

Ditching metallic tones in favour of matte products can help hide fine lines and wrinkles, he explained.

The expert said: “Avoid metallic eyeshadows and instead, opt for a matte. Matte generally works best as it doesn’t draw attention to wrinkled areas or creases."

Picking the right brush will also help with a smoother application, helping the make-up to look better. The beauty expert added: "Powder is also easier to apply over creams, especially as it is easier to blend with a good quality brush.

"Never blend eyeshadow with a finger - good quality brushes are made with the intention to blend well with hooded eyelids and fine lines."

This comes as experts at beauty and wellness marketplace Fresha shared further advice for women in their 50s and 60s.

They gave advice for using concealer. A concealer is a great tool for brightening the eyes and hiding dark circles and signs of tiredness.

However, the experts warned against using too much of the product as this can highlight fine lines and even look cakey.

They said: "This is only emphasized further when you use too much concealer under your eyes, as this can cause your skin to look cakey and cause product to build up in your fine lines, ultimately having a drying effect."

Make-up is easier to apply to skin that is well prepped and a good skin care routine can work wonders for your appearance.

An expert explained why exfoliating should be part of everyone's routine as it helps to get rid of impurities on your face, making it appear less dull.

The expert stated: "Chemical exfoliants such as alpha-hydroxy acids and beta-hydroxy acids dissolve dead skin cells, transforming dull, flaky winter skin into a smooth and radiant complexion.

"AHAs work by loosening the bonds between dead skin cells, while BHAs penetrate deeper into the pores, proving effective for oily and acne-prone skin."
