Casemiro has taken aim at the Sky Sports pundit

Casemiro has accused Jamie Carragher of being "disrespectful" after the former Liverpool defender told him to "leave the football before the football leaves you" during a scathing live television rant.

The Manchester United midfielder opened up about the comments as he reflected on his four-year spell at Old Trafford, with the Brazilian set to depart when his contract expires at the end of the season.

Carragher's remarks came in May 2024 following United's humiliating 4-0 defeat to Crystal Palace.

Speaking on Sky Sports, the pundit argued that Casemiro should walk away from elite football and consider a move to the MLS or Saudi Arabia.

"I think Casemiro should know tonight that he should only have another three games left at the top level," Carragher said.

"The next two league games and the cup final, then he should be thinking, I need to go to the MLS or Saudi.

"This has to stop because we are watching one of the greats of the modern time.

"Leave the football before the football leaves you. The football has left him."

Now, more than two years later, Casemiro has issued a firm response.

Appearing on Rio Ferdinand's YouTube channel, the 34-year-old made it clear that he still takes issue with Carragher's assessment.

"It's your opinion. I respect your opinion," he said.

"I don't like it because it's disrespectful. It's disrespectful to me."

Casemiro acknowledged that his second season at United was difficult.

Injuries sidelined him for around three months and he was also asked to fill in at centre-back during a turbulent campaign.

The Brazilian admitted that criticism can be relentless when performances dip.

"When you're not playing well, everyone kills you," he said.

"For me, it's here," he added, pointing to his head.

"The strong head."

Rather than allowing the scrutiny to define him, Casemiro has since responded with one of his strongest seasons in English football.

He has scored nine Premier League goals from midfield and played a significant role in helping United secure qualification for the Champions League.

The former Real Madrid star suggested that resurgence has made this the ideal moment to move on.

"I decided to leave because I live in a good moment," he said.

"It was the same in Madrid. Everyone misses me there. Now it's the same."

Casemiro will depart Manchester United having won both the FA Cup and Carabao Cup.

Those trophies added to a glittering collection that already included five Champions League titles and three LaLiga crowns from his illustrious spell in Spain.

The Red Devils face Nottingham Forest and Brighton in their final two league games.
