Hands are one of the first and biggest giveaways of age

Many people want to slow down the signs of ageing, with skin care and lifestyle factors contributing to graceful ageing.

And while many women have a perfectly honed skin care routine for their faces, their hands need similar love to stay youthful.

Dr Sonam Yadav - a UK-trained aesthetic doctor with more than 15 years of experience in treating ageing hands - said several daily practices will help your hands look their best.

A lot of this comes down to cleanliness. Hand sanitisers and soaps can contain harsh ingredients that irritate your skin, so it is essential to look for gentler formulas and moisturiser after every wash.

Dr Yadav told GB News: "Avoid using hand sanitiser often and, instead, use creamy washes or nourishing soaps like syndet bars.

"Avoid highly fragrant products to protect the skin barrier. The hands must be moisturised every time after washing."

The skin on your hands is very thin, which can make it look aged more quickly. Regular washing can accelerate the formation of wrinkles and crepey skin as soap can strip natural oils.

Keeping them well-hydrated puts moisture back into the skin and reinforces its barrier. It is also wise to protect them as you would your face.

Applying daily SPF is a key part of any anti-ageing skin care routine, and it is just as important to wear on your hands. This is a part of your body that is constantly exposed to the elements, including harmful UV rays.

Dr Yadav explained: "Sunscreen must be applied to the backs of hands, and gloves need to be worn when working with chemicals that may damage skin.

"Anti-ageing products need to be applied, not just to the face, but also to the neck, chest and backs of the hands.

"This becomes especially important if signs of ageing like spots, wrinkles, and prominent veins are already appearing, such as in older people."

In extreme cases, there are more intensive treatments available. The doctor said: "A number of treatments are available to address the signs of ageing on the backs of hands.

"Injectables, Lasers, chemical peels, and radio frequency treatments to build collagen can be very helpful in attaining and maintaining youthful hands."

More experts shared what to do to "maintain smooth, youthful" skin as your hands age faster than your face.
