Don't neglect your neck and jawline if trying to look younger

There is no lack of anti-ageing products on the market for skin care enthusiasts to try, but you don't need a long, convoluted routine to achieve your best skin.

Focusing on three things in your daily routine is enough to shave years off your appearance, according to a doctor.

A curated morning and evening skin care routine will help improve skin health, with "consistency beating complexity", according to board-certified, Harvard-trained dermatologist and founder of NicholsMD, Dr Kim Nichols.

In fact, the expert said three staples are all you really need. She told GB News: "Do less, but better. The most modern approach to anti-ageing is subtle and strategic. Patients want to look like themselves - just more refreshed.

"A simple routine with SPF, antioxidants, and retinoids will outperform trendy, ever-changing regimens over time."

SPF is one of the most highly recommended products for those wanting a more youthful visage. Applying this every day - not just when it is sunny - is the best way to protect your skin.

It works because many signs of ageing are the result of UV radiation on the skin - something sunscreen helps block. Landmark dermatological research published in the National Library of Medicine found consistent daily sunscreen application actively prevented progressive photoageing.

Retinoids are another well-researched ingredient when it comes to anti-ageing. An expert spoke to GB News about how products containing this - alongside SPF - can "genuinely change your skin".

Skin care that contains antioxidants will also help you achieve a youthful complexion. Think Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and carotenoids.

These ingredients can help neutralise free radicals, which in turn reduces inflammation and helps preserve the skin's elasticity.

But it is not just the main part of your face that quickly gives away your age: hands, the neck and jawline all show signs of ageing. That's why targeting these areas as part of your routine is vital, according to the expert.

She said: "The lower face is often the first area to show ageing, but subtle refinement here can restore definition in a very natural way."

So, how can you protect these areas? The doctor recommended applying your usual skin care products here, especially in your 40s, 50s and beyond.

The expert added: "Focus on skin quality first. Radiant, even-toned skin will always read as more youthful than overdone features. Prioritising collagen stimulation and skin health is key."

What you put on your face every day is important in determining how you age, but what you do to your body also counts. Poor diet choices and bad lifestyle habits will affect your appearance.

Dr Nichols said: "Lifestyle shows up on your skin. Sleep, stress, and hormonal balance all directly impact how your skin ages - this is where true longevity starts."
