Hair milking offers unparalleled shine to all hair types, according to a stylist

While trends in hair length, style and colour are ever-changing, gloss and shine will always remain indicators of healthy strands.

Fortunately, celebrity hair stylist Gustav Fouche has discovered a fail-proof method to ensure hair takes on a glass-like appearance.

The South African-born stylist, who also serves as a Wella Judge for their prestigious trend awards, has devoted 21 years to perfecting what he calls the "milking" technique.

The technique emerged from Fouche's efforts to manage naturally unruly hair that was crying out for hydration.

Through experimentation, he found that manipulating conditioner through individual strands for a full 10 minutes yielded unparalleled shine.

The extended process causes hair cuticles to close, trapping moisture within and producing an immediate glossy finish.

Beyond the obvious lustre, treated hair appears noticeably smoother and healthier overall.

The stylist advises selecting conditioners or treatments with a lower pH level, as these deliver superior nourishment to the hair shaft.

An additional advantage is that hair requires less heat during styling, reducing potential damage and promoting long-term health.

Fouche told GB News: "Hair milking works because it actively smooths and seals the cuticle rather than simply coating the hair.

"Using the hands in a controlled, downward motion physically encourages the cuticle to lie flat, while gentle pressure helps push the conditioning product deeper into the hair shaft as the cuticle closes."

This physical manipulation improves light reflection, creating that coveted immediate shine that conventional conditioning cannot match.

What's more, it works across all hair types and textures, according to the stylist.

However, Fouche noted: "Clients with hair that is dry, frizz-prone, brittle, or lacking moisture tend to see the most dramatic results."

Whether one has Afro-textured, curly, wavy, or straight hair, the improved product absorption and cuticle alignment deliver universal benefits.

For those wishing to replicate the technique at home, the stylist advises shampooing thoroughly, then towel-drying hair until damp before applying conditioner throughout.

The hair should then be divided into thin sections, with hands worked down each portion in a milking motion for the full ten minutes before rinsing with warm water.

Fouche cautioned against one particular pitfall: "The most common issue is attempting the technique on hair that is excessively tangled."

He stressed that preparation is therefore essential, advising: "Brushing the hair before showering, shampooing thoroughly with the correct technique, and detangling while the conditioner is applied ensures the hair is smooth enough to begin milking immediately."

When properly prepared, the method proves both simple and highly effective.
