The satisfying foam you love might actually be working against you

Hair has long been fundamental to what makes us human, playing a central role in how we shape our identity. But there is no one-size-fits-all approach to caring for it.

According to some hair care experts, the secret to shinier, healthier-looking hair may start with what you are putting on your scalp in the first place.

The co-founder of haircare brand Rahua, Fabian Lliguin, is among those who insist it is all about keeping things gentle for lustrous locks.

"For healthier, shinier hair, it's important to start with gentle cleansing," he told GB News. "Choosing shampoos made with mild ingredients and avoiding harsh chemicals such as sulphates (including SLS) helps protect both the hair fibre and the scalp."

But many people are unknowingly damaging their hair with products they think are good, with one of the biggest culprits being sodium lauryl sulphate, commonly found in shampoos.

"While they create a strong lather, they can dry the hair and irritate the scalp," Mr Fabian explained.

"The damage isn't always immediate, but over time these ingredients can weaken the cuticle and disrupt the scalp's natural balance."

The effects build up gradually, meaning you might not notice the harm until your hair and scalp are already struggling.

To build a sustainable routine, Fabian recommends seeking out gentler formulas that won't strip away your scalp's natural oils.

"It can be helpful to alternate occasionally between a clarifying shampoo and a milder, more nourishing formula, depending on lifestyle and product build-up," he said.

And it what is in the bottle; regular scalp massage, the occasional hair mask and keeping up with trims all play a part in maintaining healthy hair over time.

"Treating the hair and scalp with care makes a noticeable difference," Mr Lliguin added, noting it is a holistic approach that really pays off.

For women over 50 dealing with dull or thinning hair, the hair care founder has specific guidance.

"Switching to gentler, ingredient-conscious hair care can help remove residue and allow the scalp to rebalance," he said.

"Massaging the scalp regularly is particularly important, as it stimulates blood circulation and supports follicle health."

Pairing this with products packed with naturally derived oils and omegas can help hair look stronger and shinier.

Although weakened hair follicles can often be traced back to years of exposure to harsh ingredients, Mr Fabian insists it is never too late to give your hair the care it deserves.
