A debate surrounding Lurpak and Aldi's cheaper version has sparked an internet frenzy

A man took to X asking how Aldi's version of Lurpak compares to the original and butter fans cannot agree.

He posed the question: "At roughly half the price, is the Aldi version of Lurpak just as good as the real thing?"

Nordpak Spreadable Slightly Salted 500g is available at Aldi for £2.09, while Lurpak Spreadable Slightly Salted 400g is currently being sold at between £3 and £3.75 at several supermarkets.

Some Aldi fans believe that Nordpak tastes just like the real deal, while others argue that there's just no comparison.

One long-term Lurpak fan said: "I’ve tried every butter under the sun but can’t get past Lurpak."

Another added: "No - I’ve tried it. Nothing can replace @Lurpak." A third was adamant: "No comparison. Lurpak by a mile…" A Lurpak fan agreed: "It is not and nor will it ever be…. There is only one Lurpak."

One Lurpak supporter argued that Aldi's version is just not up to scratch, saying that it isn't the same at all. They commented: "There is an aftertaste with Norpak, a plastic-like aftertaste."

But others said they could not taste the difference and were happy to buy Aldi's cheaper version.

One Aldi super fan argued that "Aldi is brilliant" and essentially "the same product for a third of the price - it's a no-brainer". A second agreed: "Absolutely, can't tell the difference."

Another Aldi shopper said that they "love Aldi's take on famous brands". Another commented: "Norpak and Danepak are better! They not only taste the same but the taste is enhanced when you remember it costs less than half the price of the ridiculously overpriced #Lurpak."

Some butter buyers admitted that while Aldi's Nordpak does not quite taste the same, they are happy to buy it for the sake of saving money. One said that it's "not quite as good - but almost!".

Someone else agreed: "Not quite as nice as the Lurpak, but apparently for a spreadable it's pleasant enough."

A third agreed: "As a lifetime Lurpak user, for me, it’s not as good as Lurpak BUT good enough as an alternative given the huge difference in price."

They claimed: "Lurpak tries to deceive us by ‘reducing’ the price but also reducing the tub from 500g to 400g. They think our heads button up the back."

Aldi

While Aldi's Nordpak has clearly caused some controversy, some items from the budget supermarket shouldn't raise any eyebrows.

Aldi has announced the relaunch of a fan favourite just in time for Easter and customers can expect a "triumphant comeback".

The supermarket has also brought back a best-selling - and award-winning - beverage for those who are looking for hangover-free tipples.

Aldi was recently named among the best supermarkets for in-store shopping, claiming second place just behind Marks and Spencer.

GB News has contacted Aldi and Lurpak for comment.
