Plenty of diet plans offer advice on what you should eat but weight loss ultimately comes down to calories and finding a diet you can stick to, an expert explained

The easiest way to lose weight is to look at what you are eating and how much exercise you do.

Speaking exclusively to GB News, a doctor shared the most important advice to remember.

He suggested that, while diet plans are a useful guide, how many calories you eat is what matters the most.

"There's no one-size-fits-all answer regarding the best eating times for weight loss," said fitness and nutrition advisor at Fortune Recommends Health Dr Chris Mohr.

"Overall calories are what matter, though most people would feel best if they spread those calories out a little more evenly throughout the day."

Tracking calories is often referred to as "CICO" or Calories In, Calories Out, and involves creating a calorie deficit.

This means eating less than you are burning off through your daily activities and workouts.

Tracking apps can help slimmers find out how many calories they eat over the course of a week so they can determine how many they should consume for weight loss. Creating a small deficit of 100-200 calories is a healthy way to lose weight.

In terms of finding a diet plan, popular options include low-carb plans, intermittent fasting and high-protein diets.

To know which is best for you, Dr Mohr advised finding a plan you can easily stick to as another way to guarantee results.

This is opposed to restrictive plans that can be difficult to stick to and ultimately lead to overeating.

The expert added: "There is not one specific best diet plan for weight loss; what's most important is how consistent a person is with the program and the sustainability of the diet itself.

In terms of foods that are worth eating, the doctor advised creating meals high in protein and fibre as they keep you feeling full.

He added: "Some examples include lean proteins like chicken, turkey and pork along with all the veggies and fruit because the protein helps with muscle repair and the fibre is amazing for your health and helps fill you up.

"Fish, such as salmon is also a great protein-rich option because it is loaded with omega-3 fatty acids that promote heart health and improve overall health."
