Carragher backed his former club Liverpool to defend their title, whereas Neville felt Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal would have enough to claim their first Premier League trophy in over 20 years.

While the pair did not agree on any segment of the show, it was the "manager to watch" segment that caused the awkward encounter, with Carragher ridiculing his fellow pundit for his choice.

The former Manchester United defender chose Red Devils boss Ruben Amorim, and while Carragher found the funny side, Neville did not.

“Why are you laughing? It's disrespect,” Neville immediately retorted as Carragher continued to chuckle.

“You pick the Man United manager every year,” the 47-year-old responded. “You picked three [managers] last year and one of them was [Erik] ten Hag.”

“It's disrespectful! The reason last year is a similar reason to this: Ten Hag, because I knew last season if he started badly, he'd be under massive pressure.

“Similarly, Ruben Amorim, there's probably going to be no in between here, if he starts off badly and they're in 13th or 14th by October, November, he's going to be under massive pressure.”

Amorim has had a tough start to life in Manchester, amassing just 27 points from his first 28 Premier League games.

There is an air of optimism around the club this year, though, with the Red Devils splashing £200million on a new forward line.

United looked vastly improved in their opening weekend fixture against Arsenal, but fell to a 1-0 defeat.

Neville continued, despite the recent result, to instil his confidence in the Portuguese boss.

“He's the Manchester United manager, he has to deliver in these first few months of the season. And I think he will outperform,” he added.

Carragher questioned: “Outperforming what? You've got them to finish fourth.”

“Exactly,” Neville replied. “I know you're not sure about him, and you wrote your article the other day saying that you think he's not that good.”

The debate quickly descended into a laugh between the pair, with Carragher replying: “Did I? You'll have to read it.”

Neville then asked: “Well, what was your article about?”

“It was about the two managers, Arteta and Amorim. Amorim would be delighted if he were in Arteta's position in three or four years.”

Neville was hard-pressed to disagree.
