Co-op issues urgent recall after packaging mix-up could leave shoppers at risk

This poses a significant health concern for consumers who suffer from milk allergies or lactose intolerance.

The Food Standards Agency has issued an Allergy Alert regarding the affected product. Co-op has notified relevant allergy support organisations, who are informing their members about the recall.

Point-of-sale notices have been displayed in stores to alert shoppers to the issue.

Customers who have purchased the affected chips with a use-by date of 14 February 2026 are advised not to consume them if they have a milk allergy or intolerance.

The product can be returned to any Co-op store for a full refund. Those who bought the item online may obtain their refund by telephoning 0330 041 7737.

The Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has provided guidance on the condition. "Cow's milk and cow-milk-containing foods (called dairy products) can cause reactions when eaten.

This is because either a) the affected individuals are allergic to the proteins in cow's milk (cow's milk protein allergy), or b) they cannot digest the sugar (lactose) in the milk (lactose intolerance)," the Trust explained.

Approximately one in 50 infants is affected by cow's milk allergy, though most children outgrow the condition.

Symptoms of milk protein allergy can manifest across multiple body systems, including the skin, respiratory tract, digestive system and circulation.

Lactose intolerance typically presents with gastrointestinal symptoms such as stomach pain, bloating and diarrhoea.

This recall follows a similar incident involving Tesco, which recently withdrew its Special Fried Rice from shelves.

The 350g product with a use-by date of 2 February 2026 was found to contain undeclared wheat, prompting the Food Standards Agency to issue Allergy Alert reference FSA-AA-08-2026.

The mislabelling presents serious risks for individuals with wheat allergies, gluten intolerance or coeliac disease.

For coeliac sufferers, even trace amounts of hidden gluten can impair nutrient absorption, potentially leading to anaemia, osteoporosis and malnutrition.

Severe cases may cause fatigue, dizziness and confusion, while children face particular risks including growth problems and developmental delays.
