Unlabelled ingredient poses a genuine health risk

Tesco has issued an urgent recall for its Special Fried Rice after discovering the product contains wheat that isn't declared on the packaging.

The affected item is the 350g pack with a use-by date of 02 February 2026.

The recall concerns anyone with a wheat allergy, gluten intolerance, or coeliac disease, as the unlabelled ingredient poses a genuine health risk.

The Food Standards Agency has issued an Allergy Alert about the product, with the reference FSA-AA-08-2026.

GETTY

Tesco has reached out to allergy support organisations to spread the word to their members about the recall.

The supermarket has also put up notices in stores to make sure shoppers are aware of the issue.

For those living with coeliac disease, even the tiniest amount of hidden gluten can cause real harm, as their digestive system struggles to absorb nutrients properly.

This malabsorption can lead to iron deficiency anaemia, vitamin B12 or folate deficiency anaemia, and osteoporosis, which weakens the bones.

In more severe cases, the body can become critically short of essential nutrients, resulting in malnutrition.

People suffering from serious malnutrition may feel exhausted, dizzy, and confused.

For children, the consequences can be particularly worrying, potentially causing stunted growth and developmental delays.

The body may also struggle to heal from wounds and fight off infections.

If you've got this product at home and you're affected by wheat, gluten, or have coeliac disease, "do not eat it", warns the Food Standards Agency.

Take it back to any Tesco store, and you'll get a full refund.

This latest recall follows another incident just weeks ago when Tesco had to pull three pate products from shelves.

The Coarse Farmhouse Pate, Coarse Ardennes Pate, and Smooth Chicken Liver Pate, all in 170g packs, were found to have wrong use-by dates printed on them.

The FSA warned that those products could pose a microbiological risk, as harmful bacteria might have developed.
