The electric vehicle charging milestone has come ahead of previous expectations

Electric vehicles (EV) could have the capacity to travel up to 100 miles after just five minutes of charging time this year as new charger technology comes to market.

A new rapid EV charger designed by Israeli company StoreDot has the capability of powering vehicles for long distance travel while on a minimal charging time.

The company hopes to reduce its charging time further by 2026 to four minutes and to three minutes of charging time in 2028.

The advancements to the charger come as the company makes upgrades to both the design and engineering of the battery system.

StoreDot said in order to reach the four minute charging time, the company will be increasing its energy density and making a myriad of technological enhancements including optimising multiple aspects of the battery, cell and pack engineering, cooling design and modifications to internal connections.

After these changes, the group hopes it will enable more mileage from a charge with the existing charging rates.

The plans for a four-minute charge are already underway with StoreDot saying its technology has already achieved 1,100 extreme fast charging (XFC) cycles in a small form factor cell.

The company said it predicts an energy density of 340Wh/kg in a large EV form factor.

This achievement of 100 miles in five minutes came earlier than planned with the company continuing to refine its XFC technology as it stays on track to hit 100 miles charged in four minutes by 2026.

Dr Doron Myersdorf, CEO of StoreDot, said: “By taking a balanced, system-level approach, we are unlocking the full potential of our XFC battery technology to maximize real-world performance.

“Rather than prioritizing charging speed, our plan focuses on technological enhancements across the board - energy density, cell and pack design, chemistry, and cooling optimization.

“The result is an extremely fast charging experience that can be easily deployed on today's infrastructure.”

Alongside the five-minute charge time, StoreDot recently announced its 2024 milestones including the demonstration of the world's first EV pack equipped with extreme fast charging technology, shipping prismatic B-samples to OEMs, and expanding its operations to the US.

Myersdorf added: “While this is an early prototype and there are still challenges to overcome.

“We believe our roadmap provides a sustainable, practical, and proven path to delivering extreme fast charging that will accelerate mass EV adoption.

“We remain ahead of schedule for our planned milestones as we continue our path to commercialisation.”

By the end of January, there were 55,301 EV charging points across the UK, spread out across 31,445 charging locations. This represents a 46 per cent increase in the total number of charging devices since January 2023.
