One in five drivers have been hit with a speeding ticket in the most at-risk area

Motorists have been warned of the top areas for speeding fines across England and Wales as offences hit an all-time high.

Warwickshire ranked top as the biggest hotspot for speeding with roughly one in five cars in the area issued with a speeding fine.

Warwickshire Police issued a staggering 91,325 speeding violations in 2022 with drivers fined up to £1,000 if found guilty.

Unsurprisingly, Greater London ranked highly with nearly one in six drivers issued a speeding ticket in the capital.

Devon and Cornwall Police issued a driving offence for every 4.64 vehicles in the area while Bedfordshire and Surrey saw speeding fines given to every 8.18 and 9.14 vehicles respectively.

Both North Yorkshire and West Yorkshire also made the list with every 6.26 and 6.49 vehicles being fined for speeding discrepancies.

Tom Banks, a car insurance expert at Go.Compare, said: “Speeding is perhaps one of the most common safety risks associated with using our roads, so identifying the country’s hotspots is a key indicator of where the most dangerous places to drive are.

“It seems that the South is home to some of the nation’s worst areas, although the figures for Yorkshire are also particularly concerning.”

In Wales, however, the majority of speeding violations took place in the North with one in every 21 vehicles fined, compared with the South, which ranked the lowest in both countries, as one in 43 vehicles were penalised.

The minimum penalty for speeding is a £100 fine and three penalty points added to a licence, if taken to court however, motorists could pay up to £1,000 or £2,500 if a lorry driver.

Banks added: “If you do exceed the limit and get caught by the police, you’ll likely receive a £100 fine and three penalty points.

“This will also have an impact on the price you pay for your insurance, so putting your foot down is both a pricey and dangerous risk to take.”
