Cancer symptoms are notoriously hard to spot, partly because they appear in a host of other conditions too. Only in retrospect do many cancer patients recognise that the warning signs were always there, scattered across the months before their diagnosis.

A Mansfield businessman has told how he was diagnosed with early-stage oesophageal cancer after spending years managing persistent heartburn symptoms with over-the-counter remedies rather than seeking professional medical guidance.

John, 59, who operates a family appliance business in the Nottinghamshire town alongside his sister, discovered his condition had developed from Barrett's oesophagus.

The married father of one had relied heavily on Gaviscon for two to three years before his diagnosis, typically reaching for the antacid following a glass of wine or after consuming spicy meals.

During the two years preceding his diagnosis, John experienced multiple episodes that he now recognises as clear warning signs.

He would wake abruptly in the night, choking, and suffered from acid reflux that stubbornly persisted even whilst on holiday. A mild but nagging discomfort in his chest also troubled him during this period.

Initially, John waited to see whether these symptoms might resolve on their own accord.

When they did not, he made contact with his general practitioner, who prescribed medication to address the problem.

The decision proved pivotal in catching his cancer at an early stage, as roughly a week after his initial GP appointment, John noticed something distinctly unusual whilst walking following breakfast.

He experienced an unfamiliar sensation as food travelled down his throat, prompting him to contact his doctor once more. This time, he was urgently referred for further investigation.

An endoscopy conducted within seven days revealed abnormalities across a 34-centimetre area of his oesophagus.

Subsequent CT and PET scans carried out at King's Mill Hospital and Queen's Medical Centre confirmed the presence of early-stage oesophageal cancer linked to Barrett's oesophagus.

As the cancer had begun extending slightly into surrounding tissue, clinicians recommended surgery following four cycles of chemotherapy.

John is currently undergoing his second chemotherapy session, with surgery planned to follow the completion of his treatment course.

Reflecting on his experience, he said: "I'm deeply grateful I acted on my symptoms instead of relying on medication alone. Doing something made all the difference; it has led to early diagnosis and treatment.

"The care I've received has been exceptional, and I have complete trust in the NHS team supporting me on my journey."

His story underscores the vital message that persistent heartburn lasting longer than three weeks warrants proper medical attention rather than continued reliance on pharmacy remedies alone.
