Jim Davidson has shut down BBC radio presenter Nick Robinson, after he suggested that the UK’s national anthem is an ‘invitation to be booed’ on social media.
Speaking on Dan Wootton Tonight, the comedian hit back at Robinson’s comments, after Scottish fans booed the song during their national team’s friendly game against England on Tuesday.
Jim said: “Well first of all Dan, I don't think this is a very serious issue. It's a bit pantomime, isn't it? The booing and whatever. And why does Scotland, the Scottish fans boo God Save the King? Well, the Liverpool fans boo it. Certainly the Celtic fans boo it for political and religious things.
“I think that the Scottish fans, that there is a thing in the verse six it says to ‘quash the rebellious Scots’. But I think that's its take. I just think it it's a bit pantomime. Listen, I have a Glaswegian father, so I have to be a little careful at what I say.”
Davidson continued: “But for Nick Robinson, he just jumps on anything to have a go at the monarchy and have a go at society - let him go up to Scotland and then he could boo when they sing Flower of Scotland or ‘we’ll be coming down the road’.
“That's it. Get old Nick Robinson up there. I'm sick of listening to him anyway, he gets on my nerves!”
