Eamonn is Britain’s longest-serving breakfast news presenter, with a career spanning more than 40 years

Broadcaster Eamonn Holmes is recovering in hospital after suffering a stroke, GB News announced this afternoon.

In a statement, GB News said: “Eamonn was taken ill last week and it was later confirmed he had suffered a stroke. He is currently responding well to treatment.


"Eamonn has asked for privacy as he focuses on getting better.

"His colleagues and everyone at GB News wish him a speedy recovery and look forward to welcoming him back to the People’s Channel when he is ready to return."

Eamonn had been due to return to GB News Breakfast next week, the programme he co-hosts from Monday to Wednesday with Ellie Costello.

Alex Armstrong will step in to present in his absence this week.

Eamonn is Britain’s longest-serving breakfast news presenter, with a career spanning more than 40 years.

Before joining GB News in 2022, he anchored GMTV (1993 - 2005), Sky News Sunrise (2005 - 2016), and co-presented ITV’s This Morning (2006 - 2021).

As part of the People’s Channel team, Eamonn has helped GB News Breakfast achieve significant and sustained success.

Last year, the programme, presented by Eamonn, Ellie, Stephen Dixon and Anne Diamond, won Best News Show for a third consecutive year at the Television and Radio Industries Club (TRIC) Awards.

The viewer-voted award saw the show beat BBC Breakfast and Good Morning Britain once again.

The programme has been shortlisted for the award again this year.

Goodwill messages flooded in for Eamonn Holmes today after the news emerged.

Thousands of GB News viewers, listeners and members responded to the news that the legendary Irish broadcaster had been taken ill.

“Get well soon Eamonn,” said Lorraine Leeson from Manchester, adding: “You’re definitely missed. God bless.”

Fellow viewer Steve Wilde said: “Wishing Eamonn a speedy recovery. Come on big man, we need you back on our screens.”

Eamonn’s GB News Breakfast colleagues also shared messages of support.Ellie Costello, his co-host on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, said: “Thinking of you Eamonn and wishing you a speedy recovery.”

Stephen Dixon, who has worked alongside him on both GB News and Sky News, added: “So sorry to hear Eamonn is unwell. Wishing him a speedy recovery and a swift return to good health.”

His close friend and sports presenter Paul Coyte said: “Wishing my friend a speedy recovery. Get well soon Eamonn.”

Alex Armstrong, who will step in on Monday while Eamonn recovers, said: “Thinking of you Eamonn Holmes. Such a shock to all of us. You’re sorely missed. Get better soon.”
