The royal couple will travel between Lisbon and Porto next week

The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh will embark on an official visit to Portugal on Monday.

Prince Edward and Sophie's three-day trip, commencing on June 1, represents the first Royal visit to the country in fifteen years.

The British Embassy Lisbon announced the forthcoming engagement on Thursday, sharing a newly commissioned portrait of the couple ahead of their departure.

King Charles and Queen Camilla were the last members of the Royal Family to travel to Portugal, visiting in 2011 when they held the titles of Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall.

The visit will commemorate the 640th anniversary of the Treaty of Windsor.

During their time in Portugal, the royal couple will travel between the capital and Porto, engaging with students and community groups along the way.

Historic locations feature prominently on the itinerary, according to the embassy's announcement.

The British Embassy Lisbon stated the couple will "meet students and community organisations, visit historic sites, and showcase shared priorities including youth opportunity, sport inclusion, and Women, Peace and Security."

These themes reflect ongoing collaborative efforts between the two nations on matters of social development and international security.

The Treaty of Windsor, signed in 1386, established the enduring alliance between Portugal and what would become the United Kingdom.

This historic agreement was solidified through the marriage of King João I to Philippa of Lancaster, who subsequently became Queen of Portugal.

Their offspring earned the title of the 'Illustrious Generation', among them Henry the Navigator, who played a pivotal role in Portugal's early maritime expeditions.

Prince Edward and Sophie last travelled to Portugal together in May 2005, when they held the titles of Earl and Countess of Wessex.

The newly released portrait, captured by photographer Millie Pilkington, shows the couple in a relaxed pose, with Sophie leaning gently against Edward.
