The show celebrated its 60th-anniversary

Charlie Lawson has hit out at the BBC’s latest round of “silly” wokery after iconic character Doctor Who asked an alien for their pronouns.

The show’s 60th-anniversary was marked with a special episode featuring fan-favourite David Tennant.

Plot lines have come under question following the episode, which aired on Saturday, with one scene going viral on social media as a result.

Charlie Lawson criticised the 'silly' BBC

Speaking on GB News, former Coronation Street actor Lawson praised Tennant for carrying out the role, but still criticised the bizarre plotline.

“This is invading all our television in my opinion”, he said.

“I think David Tennant handled this very well because the character is very serious with this question.

“Television series now are issue driven as opposed to character driven, but I think Tennant’s tongue is firmly in his cheek.

“Next episode, God knows. Are we going to ask the Cybermen what they identify as? Or what sex is a Dalek?

“It’s just silly. It’s nonsense.”

The scene sparked uproar online, promoting the hashtag #RIPDoctorWho to trend on X, formerly known as Twitter.

GB News’s Darren Grimes took to the app to say: "The BBC are laughing at those who are forced to hand over the telly tax so they can destroy childhood classics with whackery and wokery."

Some opted to lavish praise on the BBC for the storyline, with one commenting: "No, sweetie. #DoctorWho's been woke since the 60s, you are just arriving here. We have always been here."

While the show saw a return for Tennant, Catherine Tate also reprised her role as the Doctor’s sidekick, Donna.

Also returning for the new swathe of episodes is showrunner Russell T Davies.

Sex Education and Barbie star Ncuti Gatwa will then take over in the role of the Doctor over the festive period as he becomes the 15th Doctor.
