The Countryfile team headed to Rutland in the East Midlands for their latest show

The BBC and Countryfile have come under fire from disgruntled eagle-eyed viewers who were less than impressed with a rather "rookie" mistake during Sunday's show.

In the episode, Sean Fletcher and Margherita Taylor were in Rutland exploring the wildlife and greenery in the county as well as taking a look at Rutland Water - the largest man-made body of water in the UK.

But just moments in, the show's blatant error came to the forefront when Taylor provided the preamble to her exploration around the reservoir.

"Rutland Water reservoir was created as an oasis for the driest region in the UK," she began.

Fletcher's narration then took over: "Built over 40 years ago, it covers over four square miles and its deepest point is 34 metres."

At this point in the show, a map of Rutland's spot in the UK was shown, placing it in a land-locked position between neighbouring counties Lincolnshire, Leicestershire and Northamptonshire.

And while Rutland is situated in-between these three counties - as well as Cambridgeshire which wasn't marked on the map - BBC viewers quickly pointed out that Lincolnshire and Leicestershire appeared to have swapped positions on the show's map.

Leicestershire was now positioned to the north-east of Rutland while Lincolnshire was now sitting to the west of the county.

The mix-up didn't go unnoticed by several watching at home, who flocked to X, formerly Twitter, to expose the mistake.

"Oh dear #Countryfile..." one fan penned alongside a photo of their television screen, which prompted one of their followers to brutally remark: "F***ing useless," followed by a face-palm emoji

"Oops #countryfile," a third added alongside their own snap of the error before a fourth weighed in: "@BBCCountryfile it's great that you're featuring my local area, but someone needs to brush up on their geography..."

Meanwhile, a fifth sarcastically hit out: "Holy moly @BBC @BBCCountryfile do we now have a new UK holiday destination? Leicestershire-by-the-sea!!!!

"For a prerecorded programme...this is a bit rookie don't ya think!"

And a sixth similarly shared a photo of the map onto their page and penned: "Can you spot the error, @BBCCountryfile??"

Sadly for Countryfile bosses, this isn't the first time the show's geographical knowledge has been the subject of controversy.

Last month, the show was urged to "get your facts straight" when its team reported from The Uffington White Horse in Oxfordshire - only for Fletcher to claim it was part of the Marlborough Downs in Wiltshire.

Next week, Adam Henson will welcome the cameras to his farm in the Cotswolds as part of a lambing season special.

According to the episode's synopsis, via Radio Times: "Adam also checks in with his Highland calves, Gloucester Old Spot piglets, and a brand new Exmoor Pony foal."
