Holidaymakers can find their next affordable adventure

As wintery weather continues across the UK, searches for “where is warm in February” have surged. But there is good news for British holidaymakers: the pound remains strong against several popular holiday currencies, helping travellers get more for their money on meals, excursions and accommodation.

With sterling performing well against the euro, Turkish lira, Thai baht and South African rand, a winter sun break in 2026 could feel better value than in previous years.

According to travel money expert at H&T Pawnbrokers, Mike Wiltshire, now is an ideal moment to lock in a sunshine escape, while exchange rates are good.

From short-haul European favourites to far-flung adventures, here are five destinations trending with UK travellers – and where your holiday budget could stretch that bit further.

Tenerife, Canary Islands

Searches for Tenerife have risen by 19 per cent in the past month as Britons eye up a reliable four-hour escape to warmer climes. Part of Spain’s Canary Islands, Tenerife offers winter temperatures hovering between 18°C and 22°C, alongside golden beaches and dramatic volcanic scenery.

With sterling currently trading at around £1 = €1.17, according to the expert, British visitors will find their spending power boosted across restaurants, cafés and excursions. From whale-watching trips to Mount Teide tours, the island remains one of Europe’s easiest winter sun wins – now with a little extra value in your wallet.

Algarve, Portugal

Up 51 per cent in search popularity, the Algarve continues to appeal thanks to its cliff-backed beaches, golf resorts and relaxed pace of life. Just two to three hours from major UK airports, it’s a convenient choice for a mid-winter recharge, with temperatures typically between 15°C and 18°C.

The exchange rate mirrors Spain, at approximately £1 = €1.17, helping to keep dining out, car hire and sightseeing affordable. From fresh seafood lunches overlooking the Atlantic to exploring historic towns such as Lagos and Tavira, the Algarve combines familiarity with solid value.

Antalya, Turkey

Search interest in Antalya has climbed 40 per cent, as travellers look east for winter warmth without a long-haul flight. Reached in around four to five hours, the Turkish Riviera offers mild winter weather averaging 12°C to 18°C and a strong reputation for high-quality, good-value all-inclusive resorts.

The pound currently trades at roughly £1 = ₺40–41, meaning you could find more affordable deals. Beyond the beaches, Antalya boasts Roman ruins, atmospheric old towns and access to the Taurus Mountains – blending culture and comfort at a competitive price.

Koh Samui, Thailand

Searches for Koh Samui are up 18 per cent, as more Brits consider a long-haul tropical escape. Located off Thailand’s east coast, the island offers palm-fringed beaches, turquoise waters and a mix of relaxation and adventure.

With the pound at around £1 = ฿45, travellers will find street food, local markets and excursions particularly good value. Winter temperatures generally sit in the mid-20s during the dry season, making it an appealing time to visit temples, enjoy boat trips or simply unwind by the sea.

Cape Town, South Africa

For those willing to travel further, Cape Town delivers true summer during the UK’s coldest months, with temperatures often reaching 25°C to 30°C. Searches for South Africa safaris have also spiked, reflecting broader interest in the region.

Sterling trades at approximately £1 = R24, offering competitive prices on dining, tours and even boutique accommodation. From the summit of Table Mountain to vineyard visits in Stellenbosch, Cape Town pairs spectacular scenery with favourable exchange rates.

Wiltshire said: “With the sterling strong against so many currencies, a trip further afield this winter will feel even more enjoyable. A winter sun holiday isn’t just about escaping the cold, it’s a chance to discover new cultures, sample local cuisine, and make memories in places you might not normally get to visit.

“Whether you’re seeking a short-haul European escape, or a far-flung tropical adventure, now is the perfect time to make the most of the current exchange rates.”
