Britons can supercharge their next UK break by choosing one of the happiest regions

The UK's most joyful autumn getaways have been revealed, with the Northwest Highlands claiming the top spot for seasonal happiness.

Gloucestershire, Dumfries and Galloway, Cumbria and Northumberland complete the top five destinations where holidaymakers find the most joy during autumn breaks.

The findings come from a survey of more than 12,000 Britons by holidaycottages.co.uk, which also reports that bookings for the October half-term have increased compared to the same period last year.

Autumn is quickly becoming the season of choice for UK staycations, as people seek out vibrant colours, crisp walks and cosy fireside retreats across the country.

The Northwest Highlands offers breathtaking scenery with dramatic coastlines and tranquil lochs, making it ideal for cosy autumn retreats.

When darkness falls, visitors can head to designated Dark Skies areas like Leitir Easaidh near Loch Assynt for stargazing, where they might spot the Milky Way or even catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights.

Gloucestershire brings its own autumn magic with crunchy woodland walks perfect for dogs and families alike. The Forest of Dean becomes a playground for Gruffalo hunting, wildlife spotting and cycling adventures.

Local farms welcome visitors for pumpkin picking and hayrides, adding to the seasonal fun. The region's popularity shows in the numbers too - it's among the top three best-performing areas for autumn bookings this year.

Peace and quiet await in Dumfries and Galloway, where autumn brings fewer tourists and more tranquillity. The countryside wears vibrant seasonal colours, while coastal walks offer fresh air and solitude.

Wildlife enthusiasts love Caerlaverock Wetland Centre, where thousands of barnacle geese arrive during their autumn migration.

Cumbria transforms into something magical when autumn arrives. The fells and forests burst with gold, red and orange hues, creating stunning views around Derwentwater and Windermere. Families can explore charming market towns or tackle child-friendly trails - and yes, muddy puddle jumping is absolutely encouraged.

Northumberland rounds out the top five with its dramatic coastline and rich history. Ancient castles like Bamburgh and Dunstanburgh look even more impressive against autumn's backdrop, while Hadrian's Wall stands majestically amid the seasonal colours.

"With added flexibility and choice, autumn escapes are more appealing than ever at a cheaper price per person per night, whether for a short break or a week away."
