"You can stay at hostels or tiny B&Bs for only £20 to £35 per night, and there's world-class natural scenery from lochs to mountains.
"Public transport is adequate to travel on a shoestring, and all but the most ambitious of outdoor activities, such as hiking, visiting castles, or driving scenic routes, are free or dirt-cheap."
Not only can you find affordable accommodation and public transport, but many of the most breathtaking places in Scotland are free to visit.
STAYCATION INSPIRATION
Think about hiking up a mountain or going for a stroll by Loch Lomond. Once you are at the destination, you don't need to spend a fortune to have an exciting day exploring.
Petzold confirmed: "For any traveller who wants a mix of adventure and savings, this is definitely one of my first recommendations."
The country is also great for a city break. Edinburgh is a picturesque medieval city, and you can definitely enjoy a cheap trip there by wandering through old streets or climbing up Arthur's Seat.
Hotels and dining can be expensive, however, so consider a trip to Glasgow for fun nightlife and lower prices. Petzold added: "If you have a desire for city breaks but do not wish to pay, cities like Glasgow and Liverpool offer rich culture at far lower prices than London.
