The discounted pass will benefit those spending a lot of time in Spain

Spain is set to introduce a nationwide public transport pass enabling unlimited travel across the country by bus and train for a fixed monthly cost of €60, or around £52.50.

British holidaymakers who take advantage of this can enjoy big savings during their next trips to Spain.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced the initiative this week, stating that the scheme would begin operating in the latter part of January 2026.

The Spanish leader described the policy as an effort "to change the way Spaniards understand and use public transport forever". It will also benefit British expats and tourists spending a lot of time in Spain.

The pass, which has not yet been publicly costed, covers middle-distance and suburban rail services alongside national bus routes throughout Spain.

Young people under 26 will benefit from a discounted rate of €30 (£26) monthly for the same unlimited access.

The prime minister stated that the initiative will mean a reduction in monthly commuting expenses for British expats and locals by up to 60 per cent.

Sánchez indicated millions of people in the country would see their transport costs fall as a result of the new pass.

He said: "We're talking about two million people who will be paying less each month to get to work, to get home or to do their day-to-day stuff. That's what governing is about: making the important things easier for ordinary people."

The announcement represents welcome news for British tourists visiting Spain, who will be able to take advantage of the affordable travel scheme during their holidays.

The Spanish initiative mirrors a similar programme launched in Germany two years ago, which introduced a €49 monthly ticket providing access to regional railways, underground services, trams and buses nationwide.

There is more good news for Britons heading to Spain, as they now have more options when leaving the UK.

This is because a popular Spanish route is set to return to a UK airport within months, with the first flights departing at the end of April 2026.

easyJet will run flights between London Southend Airport and Ibiza on Wednesdays and Saturdays during the summer season.
