United Airlines is set to reconnect Glasgow with New York for the first time since 2019, as part of a major expansion of its transatlantic network announced this week.
The US carrier, which already boasts more European destinations than any other American airline, will reintroduce a daily nonstop service between Glasgow and Newark/New York from May 8 to September 23.
The move marks a significant boost for Scotland’s international connectivity and business links with the United States. Flights will operate on a Boeing 737-MAX 8, offering a direct link to one of the world’s busiest hubs, with onward connections across North America.
United currently runs a year-round service from Edinburgh, but this will be the only direct route between Glasgow and the US.

The route restoration forms part of United’s wider summer expansion across Europe, which includes three new seasonal destinations: Split in Croatia, Bari in southern Italy, and Santiago de Compostela in Spain.
These will all operate from Newark/New York, making United the only US airline to serve those cities directly.

United’s senior vice president of global network planning and alliances, Patrick Quayle, added: “With the addition of these new flights and the return of all of our new routes from last year, United now flies to 46 cities across the Atlantic – more than any other airline – and is the clear flag carrier of the US."
Beyond Europe, the carrier is also extending its long-haul reach. United will launch its first-ever service between Washington-Dulles and Reykjavik, alongside a new year-round daily flight from Newark to Seoul, South Korea. The airline is also boosting capacity on its Newark–Tel Aviv route, increasing to 18 flights per week.
For Glasgow, the return of the transatlantic link marks a strong vote of confidence in the city’s global appeal, and a welcome sign of post-pandemic recovery for Scotland’s aviation and tourism sectors.
