Experts share the top places for Britons looking for a cheaper lifestyle

There are many reasons why you may choose to move abroad, whether to experience a different culture, explore a new country or enjoy a lower cost of living.

New research found the countries with the lowest monthly expenses for UK residents, and European hotspots have made the list.


Brazil is the cheapest place to live, according to international removal company 1st Move International, with costs an estimated 64 per cent lower than in the UK.

But those looking closer to home also have plenty of options. Hungary, Slovakia, Portugal and Spain - a particular favourite among British expats - were also named.

The estimated living costs took into account expenses such as food shopping, transport, utilities, and clothing.

Renting a one-bedroom city centre flat and monthly living costs total a combined £1,841 in the UK as of March 2026, according to the experts.

Around £824 of that is estimated living costs. Brazil is the most promising option for holidaymakers focused on saving money, with city centre rent costing £270 - 72 per cent lower than in the UK.

Spain just made it onto the top 10 list for affordability, and it is often regarded as one of Britons' favourite places to start a new life.

The country has many stunning locations to consider when relocating, with a strong expat community, beautiful beaches and lower living costs than the UK.

British expats looking to save even more can enjoy stunning coastlines close to home, which have slightly more affordable living costs.

Managing director at 1st Move International, Mike Harvey, said: “Living abroad for a short period of time ahead of committing to a full move can help people understand the day-to-day costs, housing, healthcare and lifestyle, while reducing the financial and emotional risks often associated with relocation. If they find the shorter stay in a country enjoyable, it often leads to a permanent move.
