The Tigers are back in England's top flight after nine years away

Hull City have won the Championship play-off final with a dramatic late winner by Oli McBurnie as they return to the Premier League.

The Tigers beat Middlesbrough 1-0 thanks to the Scotsman converting from close range after Sol Brynn failed to hold onto a cross into the penalty area.

The victory sees Hull come back to the Premier League after being relegated in 2017.

Middlesbrough, who dominated possession throughout the game, struggled to create any meaningful chances in the contest.

In a surprise move, the two teams were turned around, attacking towards their home fans in the first half.

Fifteen minutes in and Boro started to get on the front foot, as Matt Targett delivered a dangerous ball into the penalty area, which was well cleared by the Tigers.

Alan Browne then set up a nice chipped ball in, which was just headed over by David Strelec.

The best chance of the opening 23 minutes for Hull City came when their skipper Lewie Coyle rose well from a cross into the penalty area, looping a header goalwards, which was tipped behind by Brynn.

Boro were the better side in the 45 minutes, dominating the ball, but were just lacking quality in the final third to find a way past Ivor Pandur.

Mohamed Belloumi had a fizzing strike goalwards from a long way out towards the end of the first half, just putting his strike wide.

McBurnie went closest in the first half, wrestling with Adilson Malanda to direct a header off the crossbar.

Moments after, Morgan Whittaker brought down a lovely ball forward, setting up Strelec, who dragged a left-footed shot wide.

Boro started the better of the two in the second half, as Dael Fry threatened twice in the opening couple of minutes.

Belloumi had a half-decent effort on the hour mark, which was easily saved as the game jumped into life.

Sontje Hansen thought he had given his side the lead with 10 minutes to play, but was denied by the foot of Pandur and the flag of the official on the far side.

Joe Gelhardt, straight up the other end, nearly put Hull in front but smashed his strike narrowly wide.

Eight minutes of stoppage time were given by the officials as the game looked destined for extra time.

But McBurnie stepped up, reacting quickest in the penalty area to stab home from close range and send Hull City back to the Premier League.

The contest had been overshadowed by the spygate scandal, with Southampton initially meant to play in the final, but were booted out after breaching EFL regulations and conducting surveillance on Boro.

The Tigers, who had been affected by the situation after preparing for a week to face the Saints, did not let it distract them on a memorable day at Wembley Stadium.

It's heartbreaking for Boro, who were just three minutes away from heading to extra time.

Hull City join Ipswich Town and Coventry City as the three teams promoted to the Premier League.

Either West Ham United or Tottenham Hotspur will join Burnley and Wolverhampton Wanderers tomorrow as the trio going down.
