A country with lively cities and gorgeous beaches topped the list

Dreaming of swapping grey skies for sunshine abroad is nothing new for British travellers, but new research shows exactly where those relocation ambitions are heading in 2026.

The study by Philippou Law analysed Google search data over the past 12 months to identify the destinations Britons are most interested in relocating to.

Researchers looked at monthly search volumes for phrases such as “move to [destination]”, “relocate to [destination]” and “house prices in [location]” to build a ranking of the most searched countries.

The results suggested that while traditional favourites remain popular, some less expected destinations are beginning to get more attention.

Where Britons want to relocate in 2026 (searches per month)

  • Australia (5,800)
  • New Zealand (3,600)
  • Spain (3,190)
  • United States (2,400)
  • Canada (2,350)
  • Portugal (1,920)
  • Switzerland (1,760)
  • Ireland (1,660)
  • Thailand (1,660)
  • France (1,440)

The Southern Hemisphere dominates the top of the list, with Australia and New Zealand attracting nearly 10,000 combined searches per month.

The appeal of a complete lifestyle change, familiar language and outdoor-focused living continues to make both destinations hugely popular among British expats.

Closer to home, Spain remains Europe’s most sought-after relocation destination, outperforming Portugal by more than 66 per cent in relocation intent. The research also highlights growing interest in less traditional destinations.

Searches relating to relocation in countries such as Brazil and Romania have increased significantly over the past year, suggesting that expats are becoming more open to emerging tech hubs and culturally different environments. Meanwhile, Southeast Asia is beginning to feature more prominently in relocation plans.

Thailand now appears in the top 10, matching Ireland in search interest, while searches related to relocating to Sri Lanka have also surged over the last year.

Managing partner at Philippou Law, Gregoris Philippou, said: “The data for 2026 clearly shows that the British relocation itch has evolved into a search for stability and quality of life. While Australia and New Zealand consistently top the charts due to the lack of language barriers and familiar climates, we are seeing a specific shift in how Britons approach the move.

"Even more telling is the growing magnetism of South Asia. With Thailand firmly established in our top 10 and a notable jump in searches for Sri Lanka, it's clear that Britons are looking beyond the traditional Mediterranean bubble.

"They are seeking destinations that offer a high quality of life and tropical surroundings, but with the legal and digital infrastructure that allows for a permanent move rather than just a holiday. The 2026 expat is no longer just a sun seeker; they are savvy, strategic and increasingly looking toward the East for their next chapter.”
