From cities to coastlines, walks across the UK have been recommended

Some of the UK's most-loved walking routes are being rediscovered as more people plan outdoor escapes closer to home in 2026.

New research revealed which walks across the country are most often described as “beautiful”, “pretty” and “picturesque” by visitors – and the results span city viewpoints, dramatic coastlines and classic countryside trails.

Outdoor experts at Millets analysed Tripadvisor reviews for some of the nation’s favourite walks, ranking routes by how frequently walkers praised their beauty.

The study highlights a mix of easy-access urban walks and wilder coastal and countryside routes, offering something for everyone planning spring and summer adventures in the UK.

Topping the ranking is Arthur’s Seat in Edinburgh. Just over a mile from the city centre, the climb to the summit is manageable for most walkers and rewards the effort with sweeping views over the capital and beyond. It is particularly popular at sunrise and sunset, when the city lights and surrounding hills come into their own.

Second place goes to the Giant’s Causeway in County Antrim. The UNESCO-listed site is famous for its interlocking basalt columns formed by ancient volcanic activity, with coastal paths offering expansive views over the North Atlantic.

Despite its dramatic setting, the main trail is relatively accessible, making it a popular choice for families and casual walkers.

Completing the top three is the Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol. The short walk across the bridge offers striking views over the Avon Gorge and into Somerset, proving that you do not need to head deep into the countryside to find one of Britain’s most beautiful walks.

The Ingleton Waterfalls Trail delivers classic Yorkshire Dales drama, Cornwall’s Lizard peninsula offers coastal paths and sea views, while the Fairy Pools on Skye and Rhossili Bay on the Gower showcase some of the UK's most photogenic natural landscapes.

Author and outdoor enthusiast at Millets, Natalie Wolfenden, said: “With spring on the way, it’s the ideal time to tackle some of the UK’s most rewarding walking routes. The longer evenings give you more opportunity to soak up the scenery and embrace the season.

“Whether you’re heading to Edinburgh or Cornwall, a little preparation before you head out can make it even more enjoyable. Sturdy walking boots are essential, and I would always recommend dressing in warm, breathable baselayers that can be adjusted as the weather changes. A light jacket, hat, and gloves can still come in handy on cooler days.

"Planning your route ahead of time also helps you make the most of the lighter evenings, while keeping some flexibility means you can adapt if spring showers do appear. With the right preparation, there’s no better way to welcome in the new season.”
