Holidaymakers can enjoy sun, beaches and incredible food in these European hotspots

The ideal holiday is different for everyone, and what Britons seek out is likely to change with age.

Indeed, "travellers over 50 know what they want, and it’s reflected in their travel plans - they’re usually after depth of experience, comfort, and meaningful experiences that aren’t rushed".

This is according to travel advisor at DiscoverCars, Shelley Marmor. She told GB News "accessibility and authenticity" are incredibly important for older Britons when deciding where to go.

Shelley added: "The travel patterns of travellers above 50 have remained surprisingly similar, but the underlying preferences are easy to understand. Contrasting with the UK’s climate, these travellers seek warmth and colourful culture.

"Europe has plenty of destinations to offer. Each has a unique charm, yet matches the initial parameters of warmth, culture, and slow explorations.

"Several destinations have been repeatedly showing up as favourites for travellers above 50. The most prominent ones? Spain, Portugal, and Italy."

Spain

Spain is a favourite among British holidaymakers. In fact, it dominated a new list of the trending travel destinations for 2025. The travel expert shared this option doesn't change with age and added it is an excellent option for over 50s.

Shelley said: "Spain is a long-time classic. It’s a generational treasure for UK locals that lingers on the bucket lists. The warmth of the country extends into its cuisine and people, offering the ultimate welcoming travel experience.

"So it’s not difficult to understand why travellers are drawn to Spain repeatedly. Costa del Sol, in particular, is highly popular among tourists looking for great views, amazing food, and familiarity."

Shelley recommended Costa del Sol, which is in the south of Spain. It has picturesque beaches, hot temperatures and plenty of bars and restaurants offering coastal charm.

Portugal

Portugal is equally loved by tourists, and "the appeal lies in the warm climate, cultural familiarity - as UK tourists have been visiting Portugal for decades - and a relaxed atmosphere".

It also has great accessibility, which means it is a better option than many may realise. Shelley continued: "Lisbon, for example, might first seem too hilly, but is still preferred among older tourists as it has well-designed pathways and plenty of cultural sights.

"Inland, the Douro Valley is welcoming, with serene river cruises and tasteful wine tours that allow tourists to truly unwind from their daily routines."

Lisbon is one of the most popular parts of Portugal among tourists, while Douro Valley is less well-known. It is famous for its port wine and scenic vineyards, making it somewhere worth visiting.

Lake Como

Italy

Italy is one to add to your list, with some areas both beautiful and easy to get around, according to the travel expert. Shelley said: "Italy is known for its pleasant climate and charming atmosphere.

"With its postcard villages and food that offers a true celebration for the tastebuds, places like Lake Garda, Lake Como, and Tuscany remain highly accessible with a short and easy drive from major airports. The promenades and pathways in the countryside can be quietly enjoyed without the intensity you’d find in Rome or Milan."

While Rome and Milan are beautiful, heading to the lakes can be easier to get around. Lake Garda is the largest lake in Italy, with crystal clear waters, harbour views and even a theme park. Winelovers are also in luck as they can tour quaint vineyards nearby.
