Beaches, nightlife, quality of hotels and landmarks are all things to consider when choosing where to go on holiday.

New research has found the 10 best places for older couples to go for a UK break this year based on six key factors.

The study, by dating site Senior Lovers, analysed holiday destinations based on six points, including adult-only hotels with the best accessibility, high-quality tourist spots, mobility-friendly tours and tranquillity.

It found Portsmouth to be the best, getting an index score of 69.86 out of 100. Highlights included practical accessibility and excellent attractions.

Liverpool was found to be perfect for older visitors, as it has a slew of museums and historic landmarks that don't require navigating awkward terrains.

Belfast was the only destination outside of England that was named, taking the fifth spot. The city had the most accessible accommodation of all the destinations on the list, and it offers 23 accessible day excursions.

James Rodgers from Senior Lovers said “Many holiday spots miss the mark for what older couples actually want and need. They typically want interesting attractions combined with practical accessibility that won't leave them tired or anxious about getting to a particular place.

“Portsmouth performed exceptionally well across all measures, making it ideal for older couples seeking cultural experiences without facing too many physical barriers.

"The high proportion of accessible tours is crucial for seniors who can't walk long distances but still want comprehensive sightseeing experiences.

“Each location has its standout features. Belfast has built accessibility into nearly half its hotel stock, while the Lake District offers superb museums and beautiful natural areas.

"This range lets couples select destinations that match their specific requirements and interests. These findings can assist older couples looking for the perfect destination for a stress-free and relaxing staycation this summer.”

Another thing that many Britons look out for when booking a staycation is the price, and the most affordable summer holiday spot has been named. Accommodation is priced from £82 during peak times and there are many free attractions to enjoy.
