Being sure of what you want before booking a cruise will ensure you find the best option for you

Cruising is an extremely popular way to see the world, and some underused tips can bring you closer to finding your dream package - just note an overlooked truth about ports when researching your trip.

Shopping around and knowing exactly what you want from a holiday are also vital before booking, according to a cruise expert.

Co-owner of JJ Travel Associates Joel Wesseldyke spoke exclusively to GB News to share three top tips for choosing the right cruise holiday.

The travel pro, who often helps those over 50 figure out which cruise line and itinerary to choose, suggested focusing on travel priorities and purpose, particularly in this age group.

Three tips can help you find the perfect cruise for you

Start with purpose, not price

There are some sought-after cruise destinations - like the Mediterranean and Caribbean - but you must consider more than just where a cruise goes and how much it costs.

Ships have varying itineraries, so it is worth noting the type of holiday you hope to have before beginning your search.

Joel said: "Cruises can be culturally immersive, focused on history, observe and interact with nature, or provide an opportunity to relax. Understanding what's important narrows the choices and makes choosing the perfect cruise easier."

Look beyond the big-name cruise lines

Choosing a trusted cruise line is a great way to start your search, as there is a reason they are so well-known. However, some of the ships can be restricted with what they offer so, while they very well might be the best option for you, don't forget to look into smaller lines too. You may find the perfect package for you.

The cruise expert explained: "Marketing and advertising exist to convince you the product you're looking at delivers exactly what's important to you, which may or may not be true.

"List and prioritise what is important to you. Are you a foodie? Travelling with children or prefer adults only? Want to sail on a mega ship or a smaller ship with more personalised service? The big brands may be perfect, but they're not the only option."

Plan for the in-between moments

First-time cruisegoers may be surprised to know how much time is actually spent on the ship. Therefore, you must ensure the ship you choose is equipped with the services and entertainment you enjoy.

Joel added: "Cruising isn't just about the ports. Onboard lectures, cooking classes, wine tastings, and quiet spaces, as well as multiple restaurants, fun entertainment, and onboard activities, can make a good cruise exceptional."

Similarly, different ships cater to different needs, so make sure you know what you are looking for.

The expert concluded: "If you like early mornings and enrichment, avoid ships known for their nightlife and nonstop activity. Some cruise lines cater to 'active relaxers', others to social butterflies."
