  • reMarkable launches the Paper Pure tablet
  • It's a new entry-level black and white digital notetaker
  • This will replace the brands reMarkable 2, which launched in 2020
  • You can order the new tablet now, but shipments will begin in June

The competition for the ultimate note-taking gadget is heating up. Following hot on the heels of Amazon's Kindle Scribe slate, Norwegian firm reMarkable has unveiled its all-new Paper Pure — a next-generation, black-and-white tablet design to mimic the experience of writing on paper.

The device joins the existing Paper Pro and Paper Pro Move in what the brand calls its third-generation lineup. It boasts a generous 10.3-inch display that's meant to respond to your pen strokes in just 21 milliseconds — that's quicker than you can blink — snappier page turns, clever Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools, and more.

Mats Herding Solberg, Chief Product Officer at reMarkable, said: "With reMarkable Paper Pure, we challenged ourselves to make the signature reMarkable writing experience more accessible to even more people."

The Paper Pure replaces the reMarkable 2, which was the most affordable, entry-level model from the brand, launched in early 2020.

Be one of the first to buy the reMarkable Paper Pure tablet

You can upgrade the way you take notes with the Paper Pure tablet, a new black-and-white digital paper tablet aimed at competing with the Amazon Kindle Scribe. The slim 10.3-inch device offers fast pen response, AI-powered note tools, and up to three weeks of battery life. Starting at £399, it’s designed as a way to experience reMarkable’s signature paper-like writing feel while replacing the soon-to-be-discontinued reMarkable 2.

If you're not familiar, reMarkable is known for its ultra-thin, paper-like devices. The brand hopes to combine the feel of handwriting with the power of digital organisation — so you can search by keywords or dates to find a specific note or annotation. Everything is backed up to the cloud and can be accessed from anywhere, so you'll never need to worry about forgetting that one page of notes you needed in the wrong bag.

Unlike traditional tablets, like Apple's iPad or Microsoft's Surface lineup, reMarkable wants to offer a focused, distraction-free experience for reading, annotating, note-taking, and sketching.

As such, reMarkable devices have a glare-free, paper-like quality for a true-to-life writing experience when annotating documents or writing notes, but benefit from the perks of modern-day devices, with files synced in the cloud so they can never be lost and the ability to search for a specific word or name.

The Paper Pure comes packed with an average of three weeks of battery life between charges, assuming you're jotting down notes for about an hour each day.

This is much less than the Kindle Scribe, which promises up to 12 weeks of battery.

The device itself is very slim at just 6mm thick — the same width as a small shirt button — and weighs only 360 grams. The grooved edges are meant to feel like holding a stack of paper, giving you the feel of a real notebook. For comparison, the Kindle Scribe measures at 5.7mm, but weighs 433 grams.

The Paper Pure is also reMarkable's greenest device yet. You'll find 38% recycled materials throughout the tablet – the most the company has ever used in a single product.

Like its other models, the Paper Pure lets you link your device to Google Calendar or Microsoft Outlook, and it'll automatically create meeting notes filled with the relevant details.

It also comes built-in with its recently launched AI tool, Miro.

Instead of needing to type up everything you've jotted down, all you'll need to do is tap a button, and your handwritten notes and sketches automatically transfer to a Miro board, ready for you and your team to access and edit together.

For comparison, Amazon's Kindle Scribe offers a Convert to Text feature that will transform your handwritten notes. Although the same can't be said for the sketches you draw on the tablet.

"Inspiration can strike at any moment, but typing up handwritten notes can be a hassle," said Mr Solberg. "With Send to Miro, you get all the benefits of pen and paper as part of your digital workflow."

However, you will need a subscription if you want access to Miro.

This will give you access to unlimited cloud storage, let you write, create, and edit on mobile and desktop apps, and three-year device protection with the brand's reMarkable Protection Plan.

For personal accounts, the plan costs £3.99/month. On the other hand, business accounts will need to pay £5.99/month.

There are a couple of notable differences in features between the two plans, too. For instance, the added protection for your reMarkable tablet is only included in the personal plan.

Business plans will be treated to a user management feature, where you can manage users, devices, and security settings. You can even set up passcode enforcement and auto-lock.

You'll also be able to enforce Single Sign-On, which lets you manage your team's access through one central point. If you're unsure if a Connect subscription is for you, there's a 50-day free trial with every tablet.
