Kim Hellberg was left devastated by his side's defeat on Tuesday night

Kim Hellberg fought back tears in an extraordinary and deeply emotional press conference after Middlesbrough were knocked out of the Championship play-offs by Southampton.

The Boro boss delivered a passionate 15-minute response in which he said Southampton's alleged conduct had "broken his heart" and branded the situation "disgraceful".

His remarks came just days after the English Football League charged the Saints with misconduct following allegations that a member of staff attempted to observe Middlesbrough's training session at Rockliffe Park ahead of the two-legged semi-final.

A disciplinary hearing is due to take place, with Middlesbrough seeking the strongest possible sporting sanctions.

The controversy overshadowed a dramatic second leg at St Mary's.

Hellberg's side looked set to book their place at Wembley after Riley McGree struck early to hand the visitors the advantage.

But Ross Stewart levelled for Southampton before Shea Charles scored a heartbreaking winner in the 118th minute of extra time to secure a 2-1 victory.

While Southampton's players and supporters celebrated, Hellberg was left to reflect on what he believes was a serious breach of trust.

The Swede made clear he had no issue with Southampton's squad or fanbase, offering them his congratulations.

However, when asked whether he would extend the same courtesy to Saints manager Tonda Eckert, Hellberg responded: "No comment."

Pressed on whether he had spoken to his opposite number directly, he added: "No, I have nothing to say to him."

As the press conference continued, Hellberg became visibly emotional while describing the impact the allegations had on him personally and professionally.

"I worked 15 years as a coach to try to get to the Premier League," he said.

"That's my dream."

Hellberg explained that clubs such as Middlesbrough must search for every possible tactical edge when competing against opponents with greater financial resources and larger squads.

He said that countless hours are spent studying matches, often at the expense of time with family, in order to give players the best possible chance of success.

"When that is taken away from you, I think it is no longer fair," he said.

The 38-year-old stressed that his concern was not necessarily about what information may or may not have been obtained.

Instead, he said the principle itself struck at the heart of everything he believes football should represent.

"It breaks my heart in terms of all those things I believed in," he said.

"I think that is disgraceful to a colleague who you work against. It makes me very sad."

Hellberg also referred to CCTV footage he said he had seen, claiming it showed the individual changing clothes during the visit to Rockliffe Park.

Those allegations have not yet been tested at the forthcoming EFL hearing.

Middlesbrough are waiting to learn whether any sanctions will follow, with Hellberg saying only: "We will see what happens."

For now, the immediate pain of missing out on promotion remains raw.

Southampton will face Hull for a place in the Premier League at Wembley on May 23.
