Dyson's PencilVac is the slimmest vacuum cleaner it's ever built — and it didn't sacrifice battery to do it

There's no word on price for the Dyson PencilVac, but given the cutting-edge technology built into this vacuum cleaner, we'd expect it to cost more than cordless options like the Dyson V15 Detect

PencilVac can clean continuously for 60 minutes, despite being half the diamater of a mug of tea

  • Dyson PencilVac is the slimmest cordless vacuum cleaner yet
  • It measures the same as the Dyson Supersonic r hairdryer
  • At 1.8kg, it's also one of the lightest cordless vacuums from Dyson
  • Despite its lightweight frame, Dyson promises 60-minutes of cleaning time
  • The svelte motor spins up to 140,000RPM
  • Dyson has fitted laser-like lights to the front and back to illuminate dirt
  • There's no word on price, and it won't be available in the UK until 2026

This is the Dyson PencilVac — a super svelte vacuum cleaner that's the same width as the redesigned Dyson Supersonic r hairdryer. Measuring just 38mm in diameter, PencilVac claims the title of the world's slimmest vacuum cleaner. To put that slim frame into context, the handle of most tennis rackets isn't much smaller, at roughly 35mm. Yes, it's that thin.

It's not only slim, but it's also pretty light. The Dyson PencilVac tips the scales at 1.8kg — that's over a kilogram lighter than the flagship Dyson V15 Detect cordless vacuum cleaner, which weighs-in at 2.96 kg. That lighter (and skinnier) frame should make it much easier to use the Dyson PencilVac to clean lightshades, bookcases, shelves, and other fittings off the ground.

According to the engineers at Dyson, the PencilVac's slim design is specifically designed to help it reach into narrow gaps around your home and lay flat to clean under low furniture, something that's more challenging with traditional, bulkier models.

Despite the diddy design, Dyson doesn't appear to have skimped on the power. Powering the PencilVac is the British company's smallest and fastest vacuum motor to date, which is calls the Hyperdymium 140k. With a diameter of just 28mm, this marvel spins at an impressive 140,000RPM to generate 55AW of powerful suction. For comparison, a jet engine only manages some 10,000–20,000RPM.

Until the PencilVac arrives on shelves sometime next year, the Dyson V15 Detect is the flagship cordless vacuum cleaner from the iconic British brand. As the name suggests, this is the cordless cleaner that introduced the clever laser-like illumination to show hard-to-spot dirt and grime on your floors as you're cleaning. The Absolute model arrives with 60-minutes of continuous runtime and a hair de-tangling cleaner head

To develop a Dyson motor capable of squeezing into this slim design, the team worked down to the micron level, with every component designed to work more efficiently within the confined space. The motor inside the PencilVac boasts 34% more power density than its predecessor.

If you're starting to think the trade-off for this lightweight, thin, and powerful vacuum cleaner will be the battery ...you're wrong. According to Dyson, this stylish new model still offers up to 60 minutes of fade-free suction with a swappable battery pack.

Emptying the Dyson PencilVac is a case of sliding the 38mm frame down — with your hands clear of the dust and dirt. Dyson is using air to compress dust as it's separated from the airflow, allowing the 0.08L bin to hold five times more debris than its actual capacity

Dyson founder Sir James Dyson explained the development process: “I have long wanted to make a vacuum of only 38mm diameter (the same as my latest hair dryer, the Supersonic r). But first we needed to develop our most powerful Hyperdymium motor at only 28mm diameter to achieve such a slender machine.

"Then a new dust separation and compaction system was developed. We have taken cleaner heads in a new direction with our four conical brush bars counter rotating, so that the head simply floats on the floor, giving excellent cleaning in any direction."

That 'floating' experience is thanks to the new Fluffycones cleaner head, which is exclusive to this svelte vacuum. Built into the head are four conical brush bars that eject hair as it's picked up, preventing those frustrating tangles that plague conventional vacuum cleaners.

The design incorporates two brush bars, with the front and rear cones rotating in opposite directions, allowing the cleaner head to "float" effortlessly across your floors. This counter-rotation ensures excellent cleaning performance whether you're pushing forward or pulling backward.

Like the Dyson V15 Detectbefore it, PencilVac boasts laser-like illumination at both the front and rear reveals invisible dust on hard floors, giving you visible proof that all debris has been removed. Unlike traditional vacuums, the four fluffy brush bar cones protrude at the sides, enabling you to clean right up to the edges of your rooms — something you'd usually need to swap to a specific precision tool to do.

Dyson's PencilVac introduces a new two-stage linear dust separation system that captures 99.99% of particles as small as 0.3 microns. This innovative filtration ensures only clean air is expelled back into your home while maintaining consistent suction power throughout your cleaning session.

Chief Technology Officer at Dyson, John Churchill said: "Engineering our smallest and fastest vacuum motor is no simple feat. It was more than miniaturising every piece of technology. It is a precise integration of motor design, electronics, software, and hardware, all working together seamlessly. At Dyson, we reimagine what engineering can do by refusing to accept trade-offs.

"We are uncompromising in our approach, from innovation and engineering to manufacturing. From a new motor, a new paradigm in cleaner heads, to a new separation system, the Dyson PencilVac represents our most advanced engineering to date."

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS

The PencilVac is the first Dyson cordless vacuum to connect to the MyDyson app, offering real-time maintenance alerts and additional settings to optimise performance. If you don't want to use the app, there's a built-in LCD screen, which shows the power mode selected and remaining run time while cleaning.

A clever air-compressing bin design compresses dust as it's separated from the airflow, allowing the 0.08L bin to hold five times more debris than its actual capacity. The new hygienic syringe bin ejection system plunges dirt deep into the bin while simultaneously wiping the shroud clean.

For versatility, the PencilVac comes with two precision-engineered tools: a rotating combi-crevice tool for cleaning awkward gaps and a conical hair screw tool for carpets, sofas, mattresses and stairs that efficiently ejects even long hair.

Excited? Unfortunately, there's a bit of a wait. Dyson says the PencilVac won't release in the UK until 2026.
