Thousands of people have reported issues with using the chatbot

ChatGPT is currently unavailable for many users of the popular OpenAI service.

Real-time problem and outage monitoring website Downdetector has received thousands of reports from users experiencing trouble with using the chatbot.

OpenAI, ChatGPT’s parent company, said on its status page: "We have identified that users are experiencing elevated errors for the impacted services."

Past ChatGPT outages have lasted many hours in the past, and users will be hopeful the chatbot will be fully up and running sooner rather than later.

According to DownDetector, London is the UK city suffering the most with OpenAI’s troubles.

Other cities like Manchester, Edinburgh and Birmingham have also seen significant numbers of reports lodged.

Users took to X to report their problems with the AU software, with many saying their conversations disappeared.

The ChatGPT website has grown into a familiar stop for anyone looking for quick answers or help with creative work.

Its layout is deliberately simple, a chat box and a blank space inviting people to start typing.

Most visitors never see the complex systems running underneath, but the service depends on huge networks of servers processing requests around the clock.

Updates come quietly in the background, often improving speed or adding small features that regular users only notice over time.
