Production of the iPhone Air has dropped to less than 10%, reports from the supply chain suggest

  • Apple has slowed production of the iPhone Air
  • This is reportedly due to lower than expected demand
  • iPhone Air boasts a single camera and a 5.6mm thin design
  • Samsung has faced similar issues with its Galaxy S25 Edge
  • Slow sales could see Samsung scrap a planned S26 Edge next year
  • Production of the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro has increased
  • This is to meet strong demand for other models in the new lineup

Apple's ultra-slim new iPhone Air is not a popular pick amongst the company's newest lineup of devices.

That's according to a report by The Elec, which claims iPhone Air has reportedly had "lower than expected demand", causing Apple to trim down production as a result. Several supply chain sources told Nikkei Asia that production orders for iPhone Air will now drop to less than 10% of the volume ordered in September.

iPhone Air could be reduced to around 1 million units per month, sources claim.

The iPhone Air is the newest addition to the iPhone lineup — alongside the new iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max, which were released last month in the UK.

Like the name suggests, it boasts an ultra-slim and lightweight design. At just 5.6mm, this is a seriously skinny smartphone. To put that thickness — or lack thereof — into perspective, 5.6mm is roughly the same as seven credit cards stacked on top of one another. For context, the iPhone 16 Pro measured 8.25mm in thickness, making the iPhone Air around one-third slimmer.

Despite its thin frame, it doesn't lack power. Discussing the slim new arrival, Apple Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering, John Ternus, said: "The all-new iPhone Air is so powerful, yet impossibly thin and light, that you really have to hold it to believe it’s real. This huge leap in design and engineering is only made possible through Apple innovation, especially Apple silicon.

"iPhone Air is a brand-new member of the iPhone family that delivers advanced features our users will love, like pro performance, a versatile 48MP Fusion camera system, our innovative Centre Stage front camera, and great all-day battery life — all in a breakthrough design that feels like you’re holding the future."

So, then why is the demand low enough for Apple to slow down its production?

It appears that shoppers aren't as big a fan of thinner phone models, a phenomenon that isn't limited to Apple-branded models. Samsung has reportedly seen similar issues with its own version of the skinny device, the Galaxy S25 Edge.

Whispers have suggested that one of the reasons for Samsung's production delays for its upcoming new Galaxy phone announcements is due to the cancellation of a new Galaxy S26 Edge because of its predecessor's low sales.

However, sales for Apple's other phone models seem to be doing just fine, if not better than anticipated.

While Apple has not shared specific sales numbers for its iPhone, Apple has reportedly increased production for the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro to meet the huge demand. The team is also still aiming to meet the production goal of 85 million to 90 million phones for the entire iPhone 17 lineup.
