A lesser-known beach with hot temperatures topped the list

Montenegro's stunning Mogren Beach has claimed the crown as Europe's top beach destination for 2026, beating out traditional favourites like Spain, Greece and Italy, according to new research.

Britain was also a big contender in the rankings, as staycation favourite Bournemouth Beach was named on the list.

The ranking comes from Quotezone.co.uk's 2026 European Beach Index. Here, travel insurance experts put together a list to help holidaymakers find quality destinations that won't break the bank.

The index assessed 10 popular European beaches based on sea and air temperatures, five-star reviews, accommodation and drink prices, and how far each beach sits from the nearest airport.

Mogren Beach earned its top spot thanks to its breathtaking Adriatic coastline, warm summer weather and a hidden-gem quality that sets it apart from busier tourist spots.

Europe's best beaches

  1. Mogren Beach, Montenegro
  2. Nissi Beach, Cyprus
  3. Playa de Maspalomas, Spain
  4. Irakli Beach, Bulgaria
  5. Elafonissi Beach, Greece
  6. Praia da Falesia, Portugal
  7. Zlatni Rat, Croatia
  8. La Pelosa Beach, Italy
  9. Bournemouth Beach, England
  10. Plage de Palombaggia, France

It is the affordability that really makes Montenegro stand out. A three-day stay in Budva, the town near Mogren Beach, comes in at just under £195 on average.

Britons who want a cold one while taking in the sun are in for a treat as a draft beer costs less than £1.50, on average.

The country offers some of the lowest overall costs in the index, making it perfect for budget-conscious travellers looking for sunshine without the hefty price tag.

In the UK - with more than 6,000 five-star reviews and pints from around £3 - staycation lovers can head to Bournemouth Beach for the best local option.

Cyprus's Nissi Beach, which held the top position last year, slipped to second place for 2026. The beach still scores highly for its crystal-clear turquoise waters and fantastic warmth, with summer sea temperatures averaging above 27°C and air temperatures hitting nearly 29°C.

Holidaymakers love its vibrant resort atmosphere and gorgeous golden sands, but the higher costs pushed it down the rankings. A three-day stay there averages £318.85.

Taking third place is Playa de Maspalomas in Gran Canaria, Spain, which impressed with more than 5,000 five-star reviews and dependable year-round sunshine. It is perfect for summer as July air temperatures average 27.8°C. Britons can also grab a pint for £1.73.

Bournemouth Beach remains a classic choice for Britons who prefer a seaside staycation, offering scenic coastal views and a classic pier full of family-friendly fun.

However, cooler average sea and air temperatures of 17.2°C and 17.5°C, respectively, meant it stayed towards the end of the list.

Travel insurance expert at Quotezone.co.uk, Helen Rolph, said: "Europe offers an incredible variety of beach destinations, but travellers are increasingly looking for places that balance great weather, beautiful scenery and good value for money.

"As travellers finalise their summer holiday plans, we recommend looking beyond the most obvious hotspots, as some of Europe's lesser-known destinations may be offering some of the best all-round beach experiences."
