The Italian was one game away from progressing to the third round

Jannik Sinner is out of the French Open in a huge upset as the world number one lost a two-set lead to Juan Manuel Cerundolo.

The Italian was looking like he would cruise through to the next round, winning the first couple of sets 6-3, 6-2, before the world number 54 fought back after Sinner started to suffer with cramp.

Cerundolo won set three 7-5 before winning 6-1, 6-1 to knock out the favourite for the competition.

The Argentinian secured the biggest result of his career as Sinner managed to win just two more games after he lost his commanding position.

The world number one dropped 18 consecutive points from his position of dominance to find himself facing three break points at 5-4 while serving for the match a second time.

The Italian sat on the advertising hoardings beside the court for a lengthy period, prompting umpire Aurelie Tourte to leave her chair and speak with him directly.

Medical staff examined Sinner after he reported feeling unwell, checking his blood pressure before permitting him to return, though he subsequently lost the third set.

Sinner's exit transforms the men's draw at Roland Garros, leaving 39-year-old Novak Djokovic as the sole remaining player with grand slam pedigree.

Speaking on court after his five-set victory, Cerundolo said: "It's tough for him, he was leading the match and I couldn't win more than three games in a set.

"I was a little bit lucky and I feel sorry for him, he was serving to win the match.

"Then I don't know what happened, I think he was cramping. Of course I feel sorry for him and I hope he recovers."

The Argentine will play in the third round of a grand slam for the first time in his career following the victory.

Cerundolo continued: "I'm super happy, I will try to keep playing my best.

"I like to play this tournament because clay is my best surface and I hope to be ready for the next match."

The defeat also means the Italian will have to wait another year for his shot at completing the Grand Slam title.

His rival Carlos Alcaraz completed the feat at the Australian Open.

Sinner had already claimed the Australian and US Open and won the Wimbledon title last year.

Only six men have completed the grand slam, with those being: Rod Laver, Andre Agassi, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Djokovic and Alcaraz.

Cerundolo will face either Martin Landaluce or Vit Kopriva in the next round of the competition.
