New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani made a striking fashion statement at Eid al-Adha prayers on Wednesday, arriving at Macombs Dam Park in the Bronx dressed in a bespoke kurta inspired by Arsenal's colours.

The custom garment, fashioned in the style of the club's 2025/26 navy away strip complete with red lightning bolt detailing, quickly spread across social media.

Photographs showed the 34-year-old joining worshippers in the traditional loose-fitting tunic, which featured the Arsenal crest and Emirates sponsorship logo.

The outfit blended football culture with religious observance in a manner that captured widespread attention online.

Mamdani, who was born and raised in Uganda, is both the city's first Muslim mayor and its first Asian-American to hold the office.

Marking the Islamic festival, which honours Prophet Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice in obedience to God, Mamdani reflected on its spiritual significance through a post on X.

"Today as we honour Prophet Ibrahim, Eid al-Adha reminds us that sacrifice is not a burden," he wrote.

"It is an opportunity to see ourselves as part of something larger and to extend a hand to those who need it most."

The mayor, who took office following his election in November, used the occasion to outline his commitment to governing through collective action.

"I am honored to be New York City's first Muslim Mayor, and I am determined to lead through solidarity," he added, pledging to work towards affordable groceries, housing and childcare for all New Yorkers.

Mamdani's devotion to the north London club traces back to his childhood, when his uncle presented him with a set of fridge magnets bearing the faces of Gunners legends including Thierry Henry, Sol Campbell, David Seaman and Sylvain Wiltord.

The mayor's football enthusiasm extends beyond Arsenal; he holds shares in Spanish club Real Oviedo after participating in a crowdfunding campaign that rescued the side from bankruptcy in 2012.

His eye-catching Eid attire arrives just days before Arsenal contest the Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain in Budapest on Saturday evening.

The Gunners secured their first league championship in 22 years this season, while Mamdani has also celebrated the New York Knicks reaching the NBA Finals for the first time since 1999.
