An incident in the crowd saw play stopped on Friday

The French Open was halted after a crowd emergency during the match between Qinwen Zheng and Victoria Mboko on Friday.

Screams were heard from the stands as someone fell and badly injured themselves.


Play was immediately stopped and medics rushed to attend to the individual in the crowd. Both players were forced to wait on court while the medical emergency unfolded.

Zheng was leading the match by a set and 5-3 when the incident occurred, having just saved break points and appearing to have momentum in her favour.

Commentary team member Adam Fielder described the unfolding situation, saying: "Something has happened in the crowd here at the top, a medical emergency right now.

"We are just going to have a bit of a delay here whilst whoever it is needs treatment gets the required assistance."

He added: "I am sure the paramedics will be on site shortly to deal with this. So tough these situations, because you need the person to get the relevant assistance, just no idea how long this delay is going to be for the players."

Co-commentator Lucie Ahl noted the challenging conditions, remarking: "It is very hot, it was hotter yesterday but we've had these types of temperatures."

The court supervisor approached both players to explain the severity of the situation.

Speaking directly to Zheng and Mboko, the supervisor said: "It could be a long time, someone fell and they are injured very badly."

Both players had to wait patiently on court while the medical emergency was dealt with in the stands. Fielder commented on the difficult timing for Zheng, noting: "Tough for Zheng, having just saved those break points, she would have fancied her chances at riding the momentum into this next game and try to get this match won as quickly as possible."

Zheng, meanwhile, was able to see off her opponent to make the fourth round.

She beat Mboko 6-3, 6-4 as she continues her hunt for Grand Slam glory.
