Adolfo Daniel Vallejo has been hit with a hefty financial penalty after French Open organisers ruled comments made about a female umpire amounted to unsportsmanlike conduct.
The Paraguayan player was fined $65,000 (£48,250), a figure that represents almost half of his prize money earned during the tournament, following remarks made after a second-round defeat to French teenager Moise Kouame.
Vallejo had criticised the decision to appoint Brazilian official Ana Carvalho to oversee the match, arguing the experienced umpire faced a difficult challenge controlling the atmosphere generated by the home crowd.
Speaking after the defeat, Vallejo told Clay magazine: "This sort of match needs to be umpired by a man, it's very difficult for a woman to do it.
"It has to be refereed by a man, because it's a very demanding crowd and you need a lot of strength to go against the crowd."
The comments quickly generated controversy during the tournament and prompted a strong response from French Open organisers.
Tournament director Amelie Mauresmo confirmed the sanction, revealing Vallejo had been fined almost half of the $151,400 (£112,500) prize money collected at Roland Garros.

Tournament officials ultimately determined the remarks breached Grand Slam regulations relating to player conduct.
The punishment was issued under Article III, Section R of the Grand Slam rulebook covering unsportsmanlike conduct.
The regulation defines such behaviour as misconduct that is abusive or detrimental to the sport. The rule also covers public statements deemed harmful to the interests of a tournament or its officiating teams.

The size of the fine has attracted significant attention across the tennis world.
It is believed the penalty ranks among the largest financial sanctions handed down at a Grand Slam event, underlining the seriousness with which tournament organisers viewed the comments.
The decision also sends a strong message regarding criticism of officials, with French Open chiefs making clear that remarks targeting referees and umpires will not be tolerated.
