The incident happened early on Saturday morning

Former NFL cornerback Kelvin Joseph has been arrested following a fatal collision in Texas that claimed the life of a 27-year-old motorcyclist. The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday on North Central Expressway.

Richardson police confirmed that Joseph, who currently plays for the DC Defenders in the United Football League, reported his involvement in the crash. The victim has been identified as Cody Morris from Plano.

Joseph, 25, was driving a BMW saloon northbound when the collision with the motorcycle occurred. He faces charges of driving whilst intoxicated and collision involving personal injury or death, the latter being a second-degree felony in Texas.

Richardson police stated that "officers observed signs of intoxication" whilst speaking with Joseph at the scene. The police department announced on social media that Joseph had reported his involvement in the crash himself.

"Richardson Police Department Officers contacted Joseph and determined he was northbound on North Central Expressway in a BMW sedan when he was involved in a collision with the motorcycle," police said in their statement. Following their assessment of Joseph's condition, he was "subsequently arrested and charged with Driving While Intoxicated (Misdemeanor B) and Collision Involving Personal Injury or Death (2nd Degree Felony)."

The misdemeanour charge relates to the alleged intoxication, whilst the felony charge stems from the fatal nature of the collision.

Joseph currently plays for the DC Defenders in the United Football League, having joined the spring league after his NFL career stalled.

The UFL acknowledged the arrest in a statement to Dallas-area television station WFAA but declined to provide further comment on the matter.

The 25-year-old's professional career began when the Dallas Cowboys selected him as a second-round draft pick in 2021.

He had previously played college football for both Louisiana State University and the University of Kentucky.

His time with the Cowboys included 10 matches in his rookie season, where he recorded 16 combined tackles and two passes defended whilst starting twice.

Joseph's NFL career was marred by a serious incident during the 2022 off-season. He was a passenger in a vehicle from which two others fired shots into a group of men in Dallas, fatally striking one man in the head.

His career subsequently declined, with brief stints at Miami Dolphins (four matches) and Seattle Seahawks (one match) in 2023. His final NFL appearances came with the Indianapolis Colts, where he played just two matches before his departure from the league.
