NBA Hall of Famer and two-time champion Bill Walton has died at the age of 71 from cancer.
“Bill Walton was truly one of a kind,” NBA commissioner Adam Silver said in a statement.
“As a Hall of Fame player, he redefined the centre position.
"His unique all-around skills made him a dominant force at UCLA and led to an NBA regular-season and Finals MVP, two NBA championships and a spot on the NBA’s 50th and 75th Anniversary Teams.”

“Bill then translated his infectious enthusiasm and love for the game to broadcasting, where he delivered insightful and colourful commentary which entertained generations of basketball fans.
“But what I will remember most about him was his zest for life. He was a regular presence at league events – always upbeat, smiling ear to ear and looking to share his wisdom and warmth.
"I treasured our close friendship, envied his boundless energy and admired the time he took with every person he encountered.”
Walton was inducted into the NBA Hall of Fame in 1993 having won championship titles with the Los Angeles Clippers and Boston Celtics.
He was also inducted into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006 to celebrate his college career.
Walton his his No 32 jersey retired by UCLA in 1990 having established himself as one of the greatest college basketball players in history.
After his retirement from playing, Walton embarked on a career in sports broadcasting.
NBA legend Julius Erving led the tributes to Walton on social media.
He wrote: "I am sad today hearing that my comrade & one of the sports world's most beloved champions & characters has passed.
"Bill Walton enjoyed life in every way. To compete against him & to work with him was a blessing in my life.
"Sorry for your loss Walton family. We’ll miss him too. Doc."

Arizona Basketball posted: "RIP to a true legend and one of a kind personality, Bill Walton. We know Bill's legacy will continue to Shine On!"
ESPN posted a touching montage of Walton on commentary duty along with the caption: "There will never be another quite like Bill Walton. His ESPN family will miss him dearly."
