The two-time Masters winner finished second last week by one shot to Rory McIlroy

Scottie Scheffler has been at loggerheads with a reporter just days after the US golf star's awkward moment during the Masters.

The two-time green jacket winner was not in the mood last week for what he considered a daft question after his brilliant third round at Augusta.

The world number one had just shot an outstanding 7-under 65 when CBS Sports and SiriusXM reporter Jason Sobel asked what the round "could have or should have been".

Scheffler responded bluntly: "That's just a terrible question. Next question. Awful."

This week at the RBC Heritage, the US golfing star encountered another awkward moment when speaking to the press after having a horror start to his first round, driving out of bounds.

After only dropping one shot and saving par on the second with a clever chip, Scheffler recorded a 68, leaving him five shots off the lead.

The world number one said he would have "wanted a better start" but was pleased to make a bogey on the first.

Journalist Doug Ferguson praised him for his par on the second hole, but Scheffler disagreed.

He said: "I don't know if you could call that good. I did get up and down for par, but that was more sloppy than good."

The reporter replied: "Okay, just trying to make you look like a star, sorry."

Scheffler laughed before shaking his hands and responding: "Thanks Doug."

Reviewing his opening round, he added: "I feel like I did some good stuff out there.

"Conditions were tough late in the day. I did a lot of good things. Would have liked to have had a better start, but outside of that, I felt like I executed pretty well."

Scheffler won the tournament in 2024 and is looking to follow up his form from last week, where he finished runner-up to Rory McIlroy.

The US golfer praised the improvements made at Harbouw Town Golf Links after it underwent a six-month restoration.

He said: "Yeah, I was pleased. When you look at a place like this, if you had one of the restoration guys come in, typically what they do is they kind of widen things, they take out some trees, they make the greens a little bit bigger.

"When we heard this golf course was going to get renovated, I think that was a fear of ours because it's a special and unique place in the sense of you have to control your ball. You have to shape it both ways. Y

"ou have to do different things with your golf ball, which when you look at modern golf course design, I think it's a bit of a lost art in the way they do things.

"When I got here and was looking at the yardage book to see the changes they made to the course, I had to do a double-take; I'm like: 'Did I get the right yardage book?' This thing doesn't even look any different.

"I think Davis [Love III, who helped the restoration] has a great understanding of what makes this golf course amazing, and he's obviously had some success here, so he wasn't going to come in and do a bunch of changes. But the things that he did, I definitely liked.

"But overall, he didn't really do a whole lot, which I think, when you have a gem like this, is a good thing."
