Spurs lost on penalties on Wednesday

Thomas Frank has revealed that there is “a lot to be happy about” despite crumbling from a 2-0 lead and losing on penalties to PSG in the Super Cup, while also comparing his side to a dying patient.

Tottenham had played very well for the majority of the match, looking the better side for 80 minutes and earning a deserved 2-0 lead.

Spurs were unable to take home their second trophy in 12 weeks, however, as the European champions mounted a stunning come-back to force penalties following a 2-2 draw.

They eventually won the shootout, securing yet another piece of silverware in the process.

Thomas Frank is taking the positive from Spurs performance

Despite the loss, Frank decided to focus on the positives the team could take away from the game as they gear up to start their Premier League campaign: “I think we played a very good game against one of the best teams in the world, maybe the best at this moment in time.

“I knew we had to do something a little bit different against PSG. It was a special operation. In medical terms, the operation succeeded but the patient died. So not that good in the end.

“We had them exactly where we wanted them for 80-something minutes until the 2-1 goal, then of course the momentum shifted a little bit.

"The team, the players, the club, the fans, there is a lot to be happy with. It is a flip of the coin when you go to a penalty shootout."

Tottenham are coming off a very turbulent season which saw them win the Europa League, their first trophy in 17 years.

However, they narrowly avoided relegation from the Premier League after finishing 17th.

PSG went on to win the Super Cup on penalties

The Lilywhites now enter this season with a new manager, Frank, and without the biggest part of the club’s last decade in striker Heung-Min Son, as he announced his departure from the club earlier this month and has completed a transfer to LAFC.

The former Brentford manager appeared to be very confident as Tottenham head into the new campaign, highlighting how Spurs were able to play better than the champions of Europe.

He said: "We showed that we can be adaptable and pragmatic, and we needed to be against a team like PSG. The way we wanted to defend, high pressure and low defending, was top, almost perfect, and also the set pieces were very good and dangerous."

He concluded his comments by saying: “In one game, I think we’ve shown we can play against any team in the world.”

PSG manager, Luis Enrique also admitted after the game that he did not think his side should have won the match: “I think Tottenham deserved to win the match, they were in form and played well, and we were very lucky.”

Tottenham have a few days to rest before they will begin their Premier League campaign against Burnley at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday (3pm).
