The midfielder previously played in the Premier League for Manchester United

Paul Pogba has been banned for four years after failing a drugs test last August, with the midfielder's career now seemingly all but over.

The 30-year-old tested positive for testosterone after Juventus' first game of the season against Udinese.

And Italian anti-doping prosecutors have now given the midfielder a four-year ban as a result, according to La Repubblica.

Pogba has always protested his innocence, insisting he didn't mean to break any rules, and plans to appeal to the Court of Arbitration.

The France international, who won the World Cup in 2018 while playing a starring role at the tournament in Russia, said he had accidentally ingested the substance that caused his positive test.

Yet the prosecution didn't believe Pogba's defence and his career, as things stand, is now likely to end.

The midfielder is set to turn 31 next month and the ban means that he'll only be able to play football again once he turns 35.

For many, Pogba is considered one of the best midfielders of his generation - at least when it comes to talent.

He started his career at Le Havre before proceeding to join Manchester United as a youngster, with the star shining during his time in their youth academy.

Pogba left United in 2012, however, after failing to get assurances over his playing time from iconic boss Sir Alex Ferguson.

The France international proceeded to join Juventus that year and would go on to become a hero at the club.

He won four league titles on the spin between 2013 and 2016, helping the Old Lady dominate Serie A like no other side before them.

In 2016, however, Pogba returned to United for a second stint at Old Trafford despite also attracting interest from Real Madrid.

Swayed by the prospect of playing under Jose Mourinho, who had replaced Louis van Gaal earlier that summer, it seemed the perfect move for the Red Devils.

Pogba won the EFL Cup and Europa League while playing under Mourinho.

However, the 30-year-old's relationship with the Portuguese broke down and he never regained his consistency under futures bosses such as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick.

Pogba left United on a free transfer back in the summer of 2022 for a return to Juventus.

But his second stint with the Serie A titans has been a huge failure, with injuries often preventing him from taking to the field.

Pogba has, since his return to the Allianz Stadium, made just 12 appearances for the club.

And retirement could now beckon given he won't be able to play for the next four years.

It is a nightmare situation for the midfielder, who was once the most-expensive player on the planet.

Pogba cost United a huge £89million upon returning to Old Trafford in 2016, a record fee that was then broken when PSG signed Neymar for £200m the following year.

In September, his agent Rafaela Pimenta insisted the 2018 World Cup winner 'never wanted to break the rules'.

She said: "We are waiting for the counter-analysis and until then we can't say anything.
