Jamie Carragher went on an extraordinary rant in response to Mohamed Salah's incendiary interview

Ahmed Elmohamady has launched a scathing attack on Jamie Carragher after the former Liverpool defender branded Mo Salah "a disgrace" in the wake of the Egyptian star's explosive interview criticising his club.

The retired Aston Villa full-back took to X to defend his former international teammate following Carragher's withering assessment on Monday Night Football.

Salah sparked controversy this week with a bombshell interview in which he accused Liverpool of "throwing me under the bus" following the Reds' 3-3 draw with Leeds.

The 33-year-old forward had been benched for three consecutive matches by manager Arne Slot during what has been a difficult campaign for the Merseyside club.

Salah also claimed that "someone doesn't want me at the club" in his remarkable outburst.

Carragher did not hold back in his assessment of the situation, dismissing suggestions that Salah's comments were merely an emotional reaction.

"I thought it was a disgrace what he did after the game. Some people have painted it as an emotional outburst, I don't think it was," the pundit declared.

The former England international suggested the interview was carefully orchestrated, stating: "I think whenever Mo Salah stops in the mixed zone, which he's done four times in eight years at Liverpool, it's choreographed between him and his agent to cause maximum damage and to strengthen his own position."

Carragher went further, insisting it was Salah who had thrown Liverpool under the bus "twice in the last 12 months" and referenced the forward being known for "failing at Chelsea" prior to his Anfield move.

Elmohamady's response was blistering in its defence of his compatriot's achievements.

"Right Jamie you're a disgrace, Salah completely rewrote his story through hard work, humility, and world-class performances," he wrote.

The former Villa man rejected Carragher's Chelsea criticism outright: "He didn't 'fail' at Chelsea he was never given the chance. He went to Italy, rebuilt himself, then came to Liverpool and became a Premier League legend, Egypt's greatest ever player, one of the most consistent forwards of his generation."

Elmohamady also highlighted Salah's international contributions, noting he had carried Egypt and secured World Cup qualification twice.

The retired defender then turned personal, referencing Cristiano Ronaldo ignoring Carragher in a viral 2022 moment, Lionel Messi labelling him "a donkey", and Jose Mourinho describing him as "below average" and outside the Premier League's top 1,000 defenders.

Carragher also found himself on the receiving end during the broadcast when presenter David Jones delivered a memorable put-down.

When the pundit asked whether he had ever criticised Salah's on-pitch performances, Jones swiftly replied: "Well, a couple of weeks ago you said his legs had gone."

Viewers celebrated the exchange as the "TV moment of the year".

The consequences for Salah have been immediate, with the forward dropped from Liverpool's squad for their Champions League fixture against Inter Milan.

Manager Slot expressed surprise at Salah's claim the pair have "no relationship" and declined to confirm whether the player had featured in his final match for the club.

"He has every right to feel how he feels. But he doesn't have the right to share that with the media," Slot stated.
